Hey everyone. I’m pretty new to EDM and was wondering how do I determine what sound equals what genre? From what I’ve learned it seems like Trance is faster than House sometimes and the drums in house seem to have a focus on the backbeat whereas trance (to me) seems to have focus on the off beat hi hat. Any help would be appreciated. I’m hooked on EDM now and moreso on producing it, I just want to know how I can label my own tunes and also how to look for other people’s tunes that are in the same vain. Thanks in advance for helping a dance newb!
hey, electronic dance music is rather relaxed about genres in terms of definition, but somehow manage to produce millions of names so its fairly easy to get lost,
i’d suggest looking at it from ‘what (who) do I sound similar to’ perspective so people can actually find it
and if you sound like nothing there is, feel free to come up with your own genre
check this site for a guide tho: http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/
i would buy a compilation cd, one with house, one with, trance to start. listen to the two and note the different elements , insturments, bpm, and styles between the two. trance almost always has a higher bpm than regular house. also a lot of trance is very melodic, or epic, listen to some gatecrasher cds, which mostly is trance. for house i would start with a ministry of sound one to get mainstream traditional house
It can be all very vague because you can describe trance as being euphoric and all about the long hypnotic breakdowns and synthy builds. However you could say that progressive house is exactly like that too haha.
There is noticable difference when you hear them though, but sometimes to try to describe something is very difficult, in many ways how a picture says a thousand words, listening says much more than anyone could ever describe.
Also…
THERE IS NO HARD AND FAST RULE BETWEEN MUSIC GENRES
