Getting a bit fed up of SA

Hi,

I have been using SA for just short of six months now and have honestly learned allot from the different tutorials but feel like I might not renew my subscription as some of the other online academy’s seem to be more in tune with what I want. Without naming names there’s one offering a great looking deep house course although the price is about 10 times the amount it cost’s for three months subscription on here. I realise you have to expect that for allot less money you’re going to get allot less content but would still like to continue to SA if there was some good stuff coming up. I was dissapointed with the direction the Tech House tutorial went as I thought it went to banging and would prefer a really good deep house tutorial as the one on here is dated and not great very in depth anyway, the deep tech on isn’t great either.

Is it possible for you to let us know what’s coming up, are there any plans for anything deep like an in-depth Stimming/Maya Jane Coles/Scope tutorial or are the up coming tutorials going to be focusing on harder music?

I know there has been allot of work put into the look of the site which looks great and I have really enjoyed the forums etc but need to make sure I’m subscribing to the academy which is going to be best for me.

I hope it doesn’t come across as if I’m slating SA as I’m not, I have learnt allot but feel like there has been nothing new added for a long time that I have been really interested in.

Thanks

Alan

Hey Alan,

Thanks for the feedback sorry your not feeling our tutorials at the moment.

We are heading to ADE in a couple of weeks with the intention of getting onboard more artists who specify in particular genres.

There are some styles that my self and Bry are more in tune with and deep, tech house really isnt one of my strongest areas… I do tend to veer off towards a tougher style sometimes. Think its just how my brain hears things.

Your productions sound like you might be at the point that the how to make style tutorials wont be as useful for you.

You seemed to have nailed general production i just think you need a bit of work on arranging and mixing.

You should be looking to try and copy/compare other tracks you like to see if you can get the closer to the frequency and variation of spot fx and then try to fine tune your mixdown downs.

Try being pretty ruthless with reviewing your own tracks… Whenyour listening back note down things that you dont think fit or things your arnt 100% on.

We are here to help so if you have more specific questions or things you are having difficulties with then please ask us and we will try to help!

I feel you on that Phill . i just thought that the Tech House Tutorials and the Deep House tutorials are the weakest ones in your repertoire . i felt that it was somehow incomplete and rushed. I know that we all have strong points , and i am sure it is hard to cater all the gene res of EDM.

Ok, I work in the studio with a some of the guys that run the hollywood house scene. And used to be in the studio with a guy who is a deep house, grammy nominated producer (key word, ‘used’). If your goal is to tour the world and dj, deep house is a dead end.

What is a huge open door is Dirty Dutch, i.e. R3hab, afrojack, chuckie, sidney samson, angger dimas…This has to be the next tutorial. And I’m pretty sure the majority of subscribers agree with me.

On another note, the tech house tutorial has been amazing. I’ve learned a ton from it and can’t wait for the rest of the tutorials.

But please Phil, Dirty Dutch for the next tutorial:D

Hi Phil,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. When you mentioned about getting the frequencys right and the spot FX, that’s exactly what I’m trying to focus in on. What’s the best way to go about this. I was just thinking about it at work and would I be right in thinking I could drag a full tune into arrangement view and put the ableton Spectrum on it to check the frequency’s out that way? Is that the best way to do it or is there a better way you would suggest?

Once again, thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it.

Alan

You can try the spectrum thing to give you a rough idea but its not going to get you really close.

You really just need to do a lot of a/b comparison. As you say putting a track in the arrange view will speed this up.

A great way to really tune is dj mixing your tracks between 2 other tracks. Somehow in that context the difference are really noticable.

Subtly was never my strong point… I always want to make things bigger and more commercial. When i was doing the psycatron stuff it was always Paul who kept an eye out for my cheese factor.

Really hoping we can get some top artists in a few genres… Meanwhile ill get this tech house finished… Ill see if paul is available to help finishnit off.

Deep house is a dead end and you won’t get to tour the world? Think there are quite a few dj’s out there that contradict you in your statement.

Nah he’s 100% right here. See I used to produce the music I love as a hobby ( deep / prog house ). Then I quickly realized that this wouldn’t make me super famous, so like everything else in life that doesn’t advance that goal… I ditched it.

After reluctantly refining my skills on genre’s that I used to find too commercial or cheesy I had finally mastered the craft. Now I ghost produce for Tiesto and David Guetta, and despite the fact that I hate the music I make and my life to go along with it… Millions of teenage boys and girls love blasting my works on their ipods every day.

One of my music videos even got over a million views on Youtube (granted, a video of a cat playing with a ball of yarn had 2 million…). In the video they hired a band play unrelated instruments like a drum kit and a guitar to give it some sort of semblance of traditionally performed music even though everything was made with sample packs in Ableton live.

Moral of the story, do what you love… as long as what you love makes you rich and famous.

Very good!

You could look at it another way tho.

Fictional senario:

I do call center job that i hate…

I do hobby b that i love.

Is making a slightly more comercial track using the skills from my hobby to pay the rent worse than sitting in a call center all day?

i think not.

i have ghost produced for some big djs and got well paid for it… It also taught me to produce in many different styles which certainly dosnt hurt.

I still make what ever music i want to indulge myself in when i choose but i can also make 5k pumping out a track in the current style when i need a new car or whatever.
