Getting a wide mix

Hey Phil/Bry i was just wondering if you could explain how some guys get such wide sounding mixes, and is this due to the producer or is it the mastering job that makes the track sound so wide and full?

Ive just got this track as an example as to my ears its one of the widest fullest tunes ive heard.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Quality Reverb

Spatial expanders on pads and reverbs

good stereo placement and panning of individual sounds

Yeah thats what I thought, it seems like a loud ambience. When you say quality reverb, any you would reccomend? I currently use the psp easy verb and the ableton verb.

Also do you think in the example track that any sorta spatial tool or stereo tool has been used on the kick?

Nah just sounds like a really nice sample.

Lexicon PCM reverb is great but it’s like £1000 lol

2c audio aerther or breath are great value.

Ok thnx for that. I think if I remember correctly in the Sean Tyas in the studio thing he shows what reverb he uses. Cant remember the name of it now.

Yeah I agree, the kick really sounds awesome, it has a lot of weight and low end energy. I ran the track through span and it has low end peaks below 60hz. Has a lot of great low sounds, but I think the kick is producing a lot of sub.

I used that track for the trance tutorial but couldn’t quite get his sound… he’s an awesome producer.

Yeah, you should check out my post in the music tech section and you can see him asking questions on another forum. Its pretty cool to see that he was a mere mortal at one point like the rest of us lol…
