Going streamlined

Yo, br
br
I’m thinking to myself i have way too many synths/plugins (3rdparty) and samples. br
I’ve got like 60gb of audio samples, live suite, logic 9, plus Dcam synth squad, massive, predator, sub boombass, minimoog, analog factory, korg m1 p.lus a few reverbs n delays. br
br
Does that seem a lot of software to u lot? I find myself playing with a synth for ages n not really making any “real” music or progress. br
br
I’m thinking of chopping the samples down to a few packs and keeping 2 synths.br
br
This might seem like I’m putting my thoughts down without a real answer, but does anyone have any pointers or experience with similar ****? br
br
Cheers Andy

Learning one bit of gear inside out is better than having a ton of stuff you don’t know how to use.br
br
Being able to hear something and instantly know if you can achieve it or not with a synth is so invaluable and time saving.br
br
When i made stuff like home… i had one reverb 2 compressors and 3 or 4 synths and a multi FX box… and i dont mean plugins… hardware boxes so like one of each and thats it.br
br
so imagine using like 4 instances of a ANA, 1 x Reverb and 2 x Compressor and a couple of delays in the Whole Project.br
br
It far from restricts you it keeps you focused on the music part… which is the main bit anyway.

I’m all with the replies. No need for so many stuff. br
I mentioned it before, but the things I mostly use are:br
Sylenth1, LoungeLizzard, EVM Bassline, Korg M1

The lesser stuff you own the more innovative you have to get since you’re fairly limited and you have to improvise. That’s my opinion. I have a lot of free plugins installed that i don’t even know what they do.

cheers for the replies boys! br
br
choosing what to give up is like losing a limb :Dbr
br
im thinking predator, massive, M1… (keep)br
br
what i might do is just move the components from the plug in folder and see what happens.br
br
we shall see…

You don’t have to toss away everything.br
Just stick to the ones you feel most familiar with. The ones you know inside out.br
br
When you can’t get anything out of one, you can try master one other plugin.br
br
The ones I mentioned are not the only I have. Only the ones I use most often.br
I feel pretty comfortable with most fx from Ableton. Besides that, I use the Fabfilter EQ for it’s versatility. Vintage Warmer for getting my bounced wav ready to play in clubs.
andybez (14/01/2013)
choosing what to give up is like losing a limb :DBR
/PPLOL! i feel ya!/PPthere all my babys!!:D:D

I just use Reason, and i kind of like the way that you are restricted, and you have to work hard and smart to get great sounds!/PPAfter many years i am now getting sounds out of reason that i never thought possible!/PPIt’s true - if you stick with the same handful of plugins and stick with them, once you have mastered them you can get pretty much any kind of sound you want./PPYou don’t need loads and loads of different plugins!

I think having a lot of audio sources is good, but it also makes you lose time! You should learn perfectly one of these sources, use it a lot, and sometimes add something new!

tbh i think the reason way of working could be really beneficial.br
br
ive now moved all my synths components so they dont show in live except RP Predator!br
br
ive kept my fx thobr
psp multidelay,br
psp easy verb,br
korg mde x,br
RP Delaybr
RP Distort,br
NI Driver br
br
and of course Suite :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah Operator from Ableton I think is absolutely incredible, it’s my favourite synth-I use it on everything. I also use Massive and a hardware virus-I won’t buy anything else now unless it will add something totally different to what I can already achieve.
