Help with soundcard

Hello to you all, i’m new to production and have enjoyed watching the free tutorials. To be honest i’ve been quite intimidated by other forums but since lurking here a bit i think its safe to say you are a nice bunch. Basically i’m having trouble with my macbook and ableton live. My problem is that when i try to play piano there is a large delay. It’s driving me mad, please can you help?

Thankyou!

Claire

Ignore ICN - he’s always uncomfortable around woman

ok, so I need to increase my buffer size - I have found where to do this and it has helped so thank you. what is the best buffer size for me to pick on a day to day basis? I make techno (or am trying to make) if this helps. also the size of the buffer on Live seems different to all the guides i have found. it is free er (is that a word) and allows me to put almost any number in when the guides talk is staggered numbers like 128, 256 etc.

Hi,

Stick to 64, 128, 256, 512 etc.

The higher the number the less likely you are to get audio artifacts, but the longer the latency will be.

So you want to lowest number your system will not have audio artifacts so you get the lowest latency.

In Ableton there is a way to performance test your system. In Audio properties in Ableton set the buffer size to 64, then turn on the test tone and turn the CPU usage emulator up to 80%.

If you hear artifacts in the tone try the buffer at 128 and test again.

You may find even if the test tone is ok, when you are working on large projects you get audio artifacts and you will either have to turn up the buffer or freeze channels to reduce CPU.

There is no right or wrong answer, it is about balancing these two things, but as an indication I have mine set to 256 and have no real latency issues.
