hi there, looks like a great site, joined up as a subscriber and really new to the scene, I’ve just purchased a novation impulse, with ableton live 8 lite. so any advice for beginners or vids to watch would be great. look forward to replys.
music I’m into, any really - upbeat house, funky house - like dub step etc. so anything towards that direction would be great thank you
Hey, Welcome aboard!
Try these courses to start with
Then you will no doubt have a few questions after…
Good Luck!
be sure you know:
what sidechain compression is
also the standard 4x4 beat (incredibly easy)
learn a bit about sampling
then get some old records sampled and work on your eqing , effects and your finished . I mean this is absolute basics to get you started.
Of course after you learned the very much basics of ableton. Have fun. In my opinion this is the right path.
thanks for the replys
ill go through the mention things and get back to you
thanks again
ok watched and done some editing etc etc, question I’ve got which is probably really basic to you experienced lads.
Ive got the beats by dre headphones (solo) are these any good for doing this with (as obviously the missis doesn’t like the computer booming every night) but I’ve read the tutorials (especially the equipment one) and maybe these headphones enhance the bass? because to be honest the sounds through the headphones are amazing but not so good through the mac speakers, i don’t know which one would be a more true sound (the mac speakers probably not as good as the headphones but may give a more true representation of the actual sound I’m producing. Or the beats which are bass heavy etc etc.
Any advice on this - its just my track I’ve started to do the bass doesn’t sound that loud if i take headphones out and tracks i listen to on sound cloud the bass is fine through the macs speakers.
anyway just a quick thought on my set-up
so far…

FWIW, the Dre Beats headphones are absolute ****e. You can get amazing headphones for 1/2 the price.
suggestions matey?

I wouldnt say they are ****e they arnt ideal for music production as they are hyped but still a solid set of heaphones. although tad overpriced.
Senheiser HD 280Pro are decent mid priced but if you want a speker replacement the 600/650s are the closest to my ears.
Sorry, Phil, you are right. I just shake my head in amazement watching all these university kids walking around with these things on their heads that they paid ~$300 for. It’s maddening.
well they were an xmas present for gym and cardio work so i thought they would do the job for now but ill look at the ones suggested thanks
Alright Quinny??
You must be Irish with a name like that by the way haha
Anyway.
Never used the solo’s for production but I have the monster beats (present from the missus)
I always try my best to warn people off buying them especially dj’s/producers as they are as flimsy as a set of poundshop headphones and ridiculously overpriced but since your stuck with em here’s what I think…
At first they drove me crazy as they do add some extra bass, not anymore than the average stereo system so for making music as a hobby to begin with its not so bad,
I wouldn’t write them off just yet, as I also have a set of sony mdr v900’s and id swear the beats are much crisper in the mid/high range than the sony’s,
If you want my advise id put your headphone money towards upgrading ableton to the full version and maybe think about getting new headphones down the line as it wont be long before the le version of ableton really starts to constrain you also invest in the ANA here, I’ll be the first to admit I was unsure about the ANA as I already own a good few synths, its a cracking synth and very cheap.
mr nobody thanks for the input my friend, yeah i will be putting the pennys towards full ableton the beats will do for now going through the tutorials etc etc - a hell of a lot to take in and with 3 kids running around til late its a midnight hobby for me at the moment haha - but ill get there - loving other peoples mixes too they’re great
quinny (not irish welsh but the nickname is from irish player niall quinn who once played for city (my team) when i was a little lad and the nickname stuck from then)
Ahhh '‘Big Niall’ Legend,
Nice bloke actually, he used to own a Pub here in the town where I work, he sold it while gathering to money to buy sunderland,
Anyways no prob man…
Best of luck on you’re production journey…its a long road so try not get bogged down it it an keep us posted on how you;re getting on.
