So, I was messing around with some vocals and It just doesnt sound good. It just sounds like a big ball of mess. Its in the same key and everything. Are they sidechained? What are normally the effects done to vocals in Vocal Trance?
Every technique is different, but I have a specific way I like to do my vocals and it is something I have developed. Unfortunately, I’m not willing to tell how I process vocals though. It’s something I take alot of pride in that I figured out on my own. Plus, I dont get to work with them that often.
Could you perhaps tell me what programs you use? Or reccomend me some for vocals.
Vocals are difficult to fit in, they take up quite a lot of frequency spectrum, often fighting with the other instruments, you need to give them ‘space’ in the mix.
You don’t need anything special for that just an EQ and compressor…but it takes a bit of practise.
After those you can put anything you fancy on it…from reverb to distortion pedals
Basically just treat it like any other instrument, decide how important it is in the mix and than fit other things around it.
Do your homework on pop style vocals and you should get a good idea what’s needed for your arrangement.
Vocals aren’t tough to fit in at all
The fundamental male vocals range from 100hz to 1000hz and fundamental female vocals range from 250hz to 1100hz. The rest is harmonics. Those are ranges too, so a woman with an alto voice will sing in the lower range where as a soprano will sing in the higher range. Its the same as any other instrument. Plus, you have to remember, vocals in a song are usually a focal point, so they need to be emphasized. But like every other sound out there, you have to create space within your track and get them to fit.
Processing would include: EQ, Compression, Delay, and Reverb. All of Lives effects are good enough, but there are others out there that will give you that extra sparkle. Gotta look around though!
Awesome, thanks for the tips guys.
