How do I create a specific vocal effect?

I’m wondering if someone that can help me to create a similiar sounding effect.  This effect has been used for years and years.  One older house song that uses it is Spin Spin Sugar.  When the vocals “stretch” and it’s like Spppppppiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnn Spppppppiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnn Suuuuggggggggggaaaarrrrrr (almost sounds robotic).  It’s also used in the new BEP “I Wanna Rock” track.  It will say: I wanna rock and then it will “stretch out” the sample afterwards.

Does this make sense?  Can anyone help?

Time stretch?

it was originally a feature of the Akai S3000 Sampler… super grainy time stretch. the only really available at the time.

you can do something similar with ableton if you change timestrech to tones and turn the grain size up.

Nice one - cheers Phil! This is a great tip - works a treat! It works best if you click the *2 button just above the ‘Tones’ option to trick the clip into thinking the original BPM is twice as fast as it really is, so when it plays back it sounds much slower.

Result!

Thanks guys for the tips. I’m going to give it a try right now!
