This question applies to both Logic and Ableton. br

First off, I realize that Ableton has an in-box MIDI plug-in that you can input several notes (or a chord) to play at the same time when you just hit a single key. The problem is it will only play the same chord (or notes) you selected for each note across the keyboard. Like when I set Ableton’s MIDI chord plug-in to play a minor chord, I am limited to all 12 notes in an octave only being minor. br
br
Thus, my question, is there a way to make each single key input respond to the proper chord in a user chosen scale? For example, if I was to choose the A minor chord scale as the root and I hit the A key (on my keyboard) it would play the A minor chord, if I was to hit the B key it would play the Bdim chord, if I was C it would play the Cmaj chord, and so on.br

It’s free and you can make up some really interesting chord progressions with it too. It doesn’t translate very well musically and comes with only really odd keys built in, but once you work it out you can create much more standard keys. I think you can download user-made keys online though, so even if you can’t figure it out you should be able to find something on the website.br

I love the idea of a VST plugin like this but nothing stands out to me as an obvious solution. I am a pianist and I understand why people disagree with MIDI filters, but I just don’t think the traditional keyboard layout works in a producing environment. You want to be able to choose a scale and just be able to play in it without any prior knowledge of music theory. I’m in the process of creating a new MIDI instrument atm for just that reason. If anyone knows of any VST plugins for the job though, do reply!
Thanks for the reply! I will defiantly check that out. I am glad you are working on something because there needs to be a plug-in like this.
In terms of Ableton, couldn’t you just create a drum rack and put a different chord of your progression on each pad. Then just use your keyboard to play all the chords in whatever order you want.
Good idea, Thanks!!! From what you said this appears like it can be done by putting a pitch plugin to affect the whole drum rack (so we can quickly change the root/tonic note) and then putting each individual chord (using the Ableton chord plug in) on each of the pads in the drum rack. br
br
Now, I wonder if this can be done in logic pro 9 somehow?
So I tried the drum rack way you suggested and I can’t figure out how to route each pad to a single instrument. I have to drop A.N.A on each separate pad in drum rack.br

Does anybody else have any ideas or know of a plug-in that can do this?
Couldn’t you just use the scale plugin?
yeah, I think that you can use the scale and chord plug-in together but it still seems limiting in that it will only allow 1 type of chord (minor or major for example) to respond to the keys you press.
Hey Will, if you chain your plugs so that it’s chord first then scale and set your scale to, for example, Cminor and the chord plug to 0, +3, +7 … then you can play all the triad chords in the scale just by cycling through the keys of that scale. I think.br
br
So, pressing D for example would give you D, F and A - however, as the Scale plug limits the notes played to that scale it should flatten the A automatically giving you an Ab - so D, F, Ab. Which is the second chord in the Cminor scale and is a D diminished triad. br
br
I’m pretty sure that’s how the two plus work together when you put them in that order.
Thanks Jon, I will give that a try and see what happens.
Worked like charm Jon. Thanks once again.
Chord then Scale plug ins should sort this.
Thanks Will. Glad it worked for you.br

And Rob, read the thread!
Is there a way to do something similar in Logic 9?
Can’t help with that one this time. Don’t use Logic. Sorry.
