your track? what I mean is, I have been watching tutorials and messing about with samples and creating some decent material, well in my head anyway:P, but sometimes I think to myself am I doing it the hard way or is this the easy way, so I am not sure what to do.
So what is the best way to start creating and building your track?
i.e what do you think is best to start building first, bassline, melody, beats etc?
I always start with the main melody. After the kick of course. Sometimes i spend up to an hour ( or more ) messing around on the keyboard to create somethimg catchy and driving. I think it gives you the foundation so you can base every other upon. Basslines, drum patterns seem to then fall into place better. I think Ya can even start creating the verses and intro etc for your track once the main sound is
If you are starting fron scratch there are no real rules on making instrument riffs. Wether you start with the bass, synth line or drums doesn’t really matter. Its all about what sparks off your creativity and keeps you working an having fun.
On the other hard you should keep in mind the order in which you build your track. You want to get done with the creative part first. Set down your main riff, bass and drums. After you have that work on arrangement. Here is where you work on the order of your track (build ups, drops, automation). Next do the mixing: compression, eqs etc… Finally do the mastering.
If you stick to this process you will have a much smoother work flow that will keep you from getting into a creative block. It will also help you have a track much more organize so that if you want to change something you dont have to go back an redo everything.
Hope that helps.
Some good tips there guys, shedding a bit more light on how I will go about it.
@Masseve just listened to your soundcloud and am loving your work, hopefully your genre area is what I will be looking to base my projects around fingers crossed, maybe you can give me some pointers later down the line and help me in the right direction. once again good work.
cheers guys.
I’m not sure whether you’re working in Ableton, but I tend to do a lot at the same time.
Starting off in session view with some melody or drum pattern I like. Then adding stuff to it that sounds good. Make it fit/sit in the mix with some EQ/filter/compression.
I do this so I don’t have to do a lot in the mixdown after the arrangement.
But there’s no right or wrong in this matter. Just find your way. Find what suits you best in making great music!
Yeah Im using ableton, I sometimes start with some beats and melody, then sometimes I do a bassline and see where I go from there, just wondered if I was missing something, like a spark if I do it a certain way.
Absolutely man. Im in no way an expert but I’m happy to share what has worked for me in my projects. Just PM me if you wanna get in touch.
