How to create a full liveact with Ableton Live

Hi everybody,

I have general wonders about the way to create a full liveact with Ableton Live… there are so many questions in my head… and my english is not very good so the only way I could find an answer to them is to proceed step by step… :hehe:

Ok… let’s start from the beginning… Ableton Live have two main views… Session View and Arrangement View…

Arrangement view is useful when you want to build a complete song from the intro to the outro…

Session view is, I think, useful for DJing with Ableton or when you want to play a liveact… you just go from a scene (a line in the session view) to another and if you have a midi controller connected to the computer, you can mess up with the filters, effects while the scene is playing…

Now, let’s consider this : I finally built 25 songs in the arrangement view of 25 different Ableton live projects… with everything related to individual songs… i mean… there are around 16 tracks for each song… sometimes midi tracks with a VSTi instrument, sometimes with a single audio sample and sometimes with a loop… each track contains different midi and audio effects… some songs have a reverb and ping pong delay on return tracks, some others have a flanger and a distortion… most of them uses a sidechain compressor… but not all of them… some songs are “mastered” with settings “A” on the ozone 4 VST… some others are mastered with settings “B”, …

I think you got the idea… there is no “template” between the songs… they are all different… independent… with different amounts of tracks, different effects on those tracks, different settings, …

I don’t want pauses between the tracks in my liveact… they should be mixed together like a DJ set…

My first big question is… how can i use all these different “arrangement projects” to create a new “session project” for my liveact ? How should I extract all the data from my 25 songs projects if I want to do it clean ? And how to import all the data in the new project ?

Any tip will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot…

Friendly,

Mike Dessler.

Ok, well, I got my answer in private message. Thank you for your time, egg2… :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m a bit disappointed about the lack of answers in the topic, even to say “i have no idea about it”… but who cares ! :w00t:

If anybody is looking for a good technique to move from the studio to the live performance with ableton live, he should definitely check the Tom Cosm website and watch this video tutorial :

Bye :hehe:

hi,

A quick way to do this is to bounce all your tracks down and arrange into some sort of session that you like.

get rid of all of your vsts etc. to take the cpu usage down

if you group together tracks that you dont necessarily need separated and then go to “export” and select “all tracks” as your output.

your tune will bounce down all of your audio files including group channels return tracks.

you can then split these up into 16 / 32 bar sections and colour code etc. until you have a live set for each of your tunes that can be easily manipulated.

you can then do this for all of your tunes and bring them all into the same project at the end!

Thank you, Bryan !

Just a little question… i tried to activate the ability to open more than one process of Ableton in the preferences menu but it seems I can’t copy/paste between different processes.

So, when you splitted all your arranged tracks into the session view of your different projects, how would you copy/paste all those sessions into a new project ?

Hi mike  do you want to play your tracks as a dj type thing or mix all your tracks live?

Swayzak have a live set and video of them talking about it on Ableton’s website.

Generally speaking they have everything rendered down to audio files, but they keep a few Operator patches that they can play and tweak in real time.

The only DJ type thing in my liveact would be the lack of blank between the songs… I don’t want to play a song, end it, “get applauses” and start the next song…

I want to mix the tracks like a DJ but keep the flexibility of a liveact… meaning i can mute individual tracks of a song, play with effects and filters on those individual tracks, … and suddendly decide to replace the bass of “song 2” with the bass of “song 3” while “song 1” is still playing… see what i mean ?

@pax1728: thank you, i’m going to have a look at this !

Cheers for updating my account gents, I have heard lot on tutorials online about bouncing tracks?

Can someone elaborate pls.

Looking forward to the new website as well.
