Hmm if its the sound I am thinking of, Put a few square waves together that are detuned slightly. Then you can do something like a fast step velocity on the cutoff so it gets that gritty sound. Then to get it hollow, I would suggest using eq to hollow out what you want. Dramatic EQing will make anything hollow.
