How to describe and make this sound

I really like the sound of this track (- YouTube) and being relatively new in the world of electronic music coming from a purely rock/metal background any help on understanding the layering process behind this track would be immensely helpful =)

From the tutorials this kinds of sounds like funky house to me? not sure though

Thanks!

Hi mate - its definately not funky house, or any form of house tbh!  House has a strong beat revolving around a prominant 4x4 kickdrum with an offbeat hat.

That is a cool track from a DS game I’ve played but I wouldn’t say that it was any form of ‘dance’ music.  The drums are too weak/laid back to be dance.

I would be surprised if the track was not produced specifically for the game.   Electronic-japanese-pop is my guess at the genre

To make this kind of track you need to program in funky ‘live’ sounding drums.  It doesnt sound like any kick is used at all.  Light lo-fi snares and hats. You need a guitar player as well (or access to some good guitar samples!) Sounds like a couple of different guitar parts playing.

You might be better off looking into techniques for mixing ‘live’ music, bands etc.

EDIT: just re-read and noticed you come from a ‘live’ producing background!  There is a pretty simple synth patch playing throughout, sounds like its made from a reversed string sound in a sampler.  But mainly the track is drums and guitar and of course that strange vocal part.  The vocal doesn’t sound like its heavily processed, the singer just has a nice voice and you can’t make out the actual pronounciation which makes the vocal part sound weird!

Trip hop?

Hey thanks very much for the replies and detailed explanation.

I shall try experimenting with the lo fi snares like you mentioned with the reverse string synth sample. I’m guessing thats how that swooshy sound is created by making the trail off parts come in first

thanks!
