Some tracks that I hear the a sound that seems to surround me. Let me explain what I mean. Most of my tracks that I make, the sounds seem in the middle and stretch from the middle out (if that makes sense). With many sounds, the middle can get saturated and frequencies can overlap and cancel each other out (I presume).
Yet, when I hear professional tracks, the middle doesn’t sound so saturated, instead it appears to surround meaning that you can hear the sound in both the left and right channels but not its not saturated in the middle.
Is this convolution reverb or some other type of reverb? Please let me know how i can get this effect as I always hear it in the best tracks that are out now.
Thanks!!
have you watched the Mixing - creating space tutorial?
Thanks Phil, checked it out and it certainly covers a lot of ground. I will play around a bit more. I do notice that it provides that surrounding effect.
I want the listener to feel they are in the center of sounds verses in the middle. The different is that when a user is in the center, they can hear 25% of a sound to the bottom left of them and 75% in the top right. If they were in the middle, it would be 25% in the left and 75% on the right.
I recall one time seeing a pic of a plugin that allowed this spacial effect but I cannot remember the name of it, any idea of such a plugin? I remember that you can literally place drag the “user” around a box and the plugin would automatically calculate the distribution of sound. I imagine that there must be more than one plugin that may do this as I am sure its not just used in music but also in movies as well.
Thanks for all your help!
most top end plugin reverbs have a sort of 3d quality to them… that could be what you are hearing.
you get it with some convolution reverbs too.
Which one do you recommend?
Thanks for the info
2CAudio Aether is great for the money
Lexicon sounds great but is prohibitively expensive.
check the understanding reverb course to hear them in action.
