How To Make Classic Balearic Trance

View Course

Kicking things off in style for our brand new Classic Balearic Trance Takeover event is none other than our very own Phil Johnston and Chris Agnelli!

In this epic new How To Make course, Phil and Chris build a new track from scratch, completely unplanned, and restricting themselves as much as possible to how it was ‘back in the day’.

This is a different style of course, as it’s a collaboration where ideas bounce back and forth, trial and error are explored, and plenty of discussion takes place about the differences between producing in the 90s and today.

We begin with a look at some of the defining classics and their simple yet incredibly effective chord structures, before Phil and Chris set about capturing the essence of that era with trance plucks, arps, drums, percussion, arrangements, and everything in between.

This is a journey you’ll definitely want to witness, so check it out!

But that’s not all…

To celebrate this event, we’re hosting a brand new Remix Competition where you can use your newfound skills and make your very own version of this track with some incredible and exclusive prizes up for grabs!
Find out more by clicking on the ‘REMIX COMPETITION’ tab!

Competition ends 27th Oct 2025 - 23:59 PT

First of all, I really liked the song Chris and Phil made. But what made me love the course was listening to them talking about the 90’s trance scene and production equipment.

Hi guys! great course. Quick question, what are some of the recommended key’s to use for this type of trance music?

Fm

Gm

Where the most popular in our analysis. These get the root note of your bass in the sweat spot.

Although there were loads of different keys. So not a rule. Just a good starting place.

great

@phil_johnston The downloadable project files all use the AUv2 version of ANA2, rather than the VST3. This is an issue for those of us running Windows.

A Trevor Horn interview was mentioned about three notes and three ideas. Does anyone know what this is in reference to?

Hmm, checked the transcript and think that was referring to Thrillseekers mentioning SAR West producer Trevor Horn in the Inside Track - Classic Balearic Trance Interview, but not an interview with the man himself.

All available Interviews videos here by the way : Interviews

Hope that helps !

Cheers :sunglasses:

Has anyone else had trouble playing the videos? My wifi is fine but the videos keep stopping and trying to load

Sorry for the delayed reply

Streaming the videos online working well for me here, is this still a thing with issue to playback the videos on your side ??

Thanks for the reply on the keys @phil_johnston

Also, yes Im still having playback issues. Gonna try to delete cookies and such.

Lastly, any chance we could get the ableton project file with the frozen assets? Im not able to play any of the sounds besides the drum loops and the bass
