I keep getting told that I need to “make my own sound” that people will recognize me by and yes I see that almost every single artist has something that makes them unique and is used in almost every track of theirs, unless they do pres. (something) in which case its a different style. But my question is what exactly do I do to get on that track, do I just sit with a synth and press random knobs until I get something I like and use it forever or is there more to it?
Thanks for your time.
Just make stuff that you love and not beacuase
A. Its whats popular right now… (doing that means your already 6 months behind the times by the time your tracm is released.
B. You think it might sell more records. ( it wont… Record sales work through neagals… Or cool experts… They buy or hear it first and tell all their mates… The “connectors” then the connetors spread the word. So it has to be cool and/or awesome first before it will spread.
C. Its easier to make genre “x”

yes i understand that, i’ll never “sell out” i want to do it for the music but at the same time if i just make random songs that aren’t related it will be kind’ve weird. An example is Armin van Buuren has his own sound, but when it’s Armin van Buuren pres. Gaia or Rising Star, etc… it is a different sound almost entirely, so he maintains something and I just don’t understand how he does that.
Also I actually really prefer classic trance, I am actually listening to armin comp albums from 2000+ and I found Coast 2 Coast - Home and 4 Strings - Into The Night (Coast 2 Coast Remix) and even thought that’s the kind of music I want to make I doubt anybody will like it at this time but I am still going to try.
You have good taste!
I think its easier to have your own sound if you stick to the same plugin combos for a bunch of tracks. i think its also something that happens naturally. As you progress with your productions you will have some favoroite loops, samples and presets you keep going back too.
