i’ve been workin on it for 2 weeks. it ain’t easy! and I still dont have an answer 4 yeah.
best thing to start workin on is resampling bass lines.
Hi M8 came across this on my extensive hunt on the internet lol hope this helps us both out a bit

you can check out this video on resampling at Sonic Academy.

I know for a fact that the bass lines you hear in excision, datsik, borgor is done through resampling.
thanks for posting ur links up.
PS. Massive is a great synth for dubstep.
probably the hardest type of music to make ive heard in a whie its so random

I dunno, the poster seems to get the sound down pretty well. There’s not too much explanation, but it might give you an idea.
I just found out about skrilex this week and it blew my mind as there are so many things going on and those freaking wobble basses and sick. I hope we can get a tutorial on it.
I have one question though …is this guy programming these sounds or is it all messed around samples because I heard in a interview that he had trouble clearing a sample from street fighter

he is definitely synthesizing sounds. the bass line, all the other sounds are from vsts, mostly likely massive. getting the bass sound has to do with re-sampling the synth sounds as audio repeatedly until you get the crazy wild sounds he does. any vocals or whatever he probably has clearance for, but the interesting parts he is making from scratch.
i’ve been listening to a TON of skrillex lately. guy is amazing. he took dubstep and made it his own. i’m going to see him in NYC tonight, f0ckin psyched to watch him blow the doors off the place.
again. check out this video to undestand the process...

While I definitely agree that no preset is just going to give you the “Skrillex” sound, there are definitely things you can do to get there.
If you have Massive or any synth with phase modulation and a scream filter, it’s a pretty easy process:
- Assign three oscillators, one with a basic sin wave, one with a square or slightly distorted saw wave (I use roughmath I in massive) and one with a h-pulse type sound (I use scream).
- Use the phase modulation tool and set it down one octave (-12.00). You can also detune it for major griminess. Then, play with it until you get the sound you want.
- Use a scream filter and toy with the resonance till you get either the white noise-ish womp or the lower pitch grind you’re trying to get.
- Assign LFOs to the cutoff of the scream, the “scream” knob, and maybe the resonance and phase modulation oscillator.
Then you can resample from here. You might want to drastically change the harmonics, otherwise it tends to get so grimy it’s just noise.
