This is the thing, i watched the theory video again earlier today to double check but he doesn’t go into the why, he just says it is, not why.
How is it Bflat major scale? How did he find that out when it’s playing in Eflat? It doesn’t make sense.
I want to be able to understand that so that i can do the same thing he did.
your right roben, he doesnt go into it!!
i’ve emailed him to ask him to go further into detail with theory
maybe if you guys do the same he might knock up a vid on it!!!
Yeah hes pretty good with replying emails.

You’re telling me!! He emailed me and all i did was ask the question as a comment on the theory video! Very impressed:
Hi Roben,
I replied to your question on the site, but wanted to send you an email in case you haven’t seen my reply yet. Let me know if you have more questions.
Here’s an explanation of the general process that I follow when figuring out a track’s scale, tonal center, and mode:
Step 1: Identify the notes that sound right with the song and determine the MAJOR scale that these notes comprise. I always determine a MAJOR scale first – this makes it easier to determine the Mode. So, for your example, you basically play by ear with the song and determine that all the Dflat-Major scale notes sound correct – so it’s likely a Dflat major scale is being used.
Step 2: Identify the tonal center. This can be the tricky part and sometimes our ears can be fooled. The basic idea is to listen to the bass line. Usually the note that is played the most during the song is the tonal center. So for the example, you do this and determine that C is the tonal center of the track.
Step 3: Based on the scale determined in step 1 and the tonal center in step 2, we can now determine the mode. It’s simply the position of the tonal center note within the scale.
So, continuing with the example, the Dflat major scale is comprised of the following notes:
1 Db
2 Eb
3 F
4 Gb
5 Ab
6 Bb
7 C
Because C is the 7th note in the Dflat Major scale (i.e. “7th scale degree”), that corresponds to the Locrian mode. Because of this, the song is being played as if C were the 1st scale degree with the following scale: C Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb – which is not C major or C minor… it’s C Locrian and has a completely different emotional quality to it.
Basically, once you know the MAJOR scale and the tonal center, you just look at what position the tonal center takes within the major scale and that’s the mode.
Here’s the list of modes based on their position within ANY major scale:
- Ionian
- Dorian
- Phrygian
- Lydian
- Mixolydian
- Aeolian
- Locrian
If time permits, I’ll try and do a video tutorial demonstrating how to do this in Module 3 or Module 4.
Cheers!
Scott

No we did not - but then we must have posted about 150 tracks by the time we reached 22 pages - as far as I can tell here most of the posts here is chatter or moaning
Yeah we should start getting the youtube clips on the go. But in the 20 different topics asking for trance there have been quite a few clips posted. You see us trance people are a friendly lot lol we like a bit of chatter and we all love to moan. We are a very emotional bunch of people.

Ah we’re emotional too, but we just have dark and sinster thoughts ;)
I can deffo see where your coming from slender. If i had to listen to 8 minute tracks of the same beat and sounds i suspect my mind would turn sinister very quickly
