You need to understand theory in order to successfully make music, whether you realise you understand theory or not, the fact is, even a basic level of understanding of theory is involved, whether that is self taught consciously / unconsciously or taught.

And in Trance it’s an absolute must! You can’t just throw notes around and hope they sound right. I know this because I’ve tried. You have to stay in a certain scale. Now of course their is the artistic freedom do what you want in those parameters, but what makes a top producer so good is that their able have a unique sound within the certain rules of music.
Oh no doubt knowledge is power,I sit very much on the theory side of the fence I like to understand how and why notes and chords have a certain relationship together and why others dont, some producers understand which notes and chord progressions work without understanding why they work but they have come accustomed to working that way and it works for them,me on the other hand Ive only started and I dont have a music background so Im after a better understanding of music as a whole.
JUST BY LISTENING TO THE COMPLEX OF ALL THE SYNTHS ALONE YOU CAN TELL THAT TRANCE HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT GENRES TO CREATE.
bearing in mind, that music theory really does play a huge part in this.
this track is a classic example, of a modern trance track, which was hammered this year by many.
my mind goes completely blank, just trying to break down the sounds in my head.
anybody got an idea what these guys used for this?
To the guy who posted the tiesto vid on youtube you really are an idiot! You post that video without even understanding what the **** hes saying lol in that VERY video he is asked about his music theory knowledge!!! You know what his answer is!!! Errr when i was young i played the flute for a while, but no i know NOTHING really about music theory i just hear when something sounds good together!!! i did read the interview with english subtitles but since i don’t understand dutch i thought it was a joke considering who it was.
i stand corrected i guess you can be one of the top dj’s/producers in the world and know no music theory. kind of surprised by that!!
there’s hope for those who no nothing about about music theory and want to make as world class dj/producer.

I dunno i think it sounds like a mix of a saw and square wave with some white noise a short decay and some filter modulation but i could be well off the mark, ask post it and ask phil on the “get that sound” thread.
Just read this entire thread with alot of interest.
+1 for keeping it going.
Lets keep it alive people!!!
IN TRANCE WE TRUST!!!
just got the Aether reverb vst/plugin.
highly recommend it! adds some big spacious reverb on those trance parts.
tons of quality presets too.
Trance around the world
12 new videos from Scott Mclean on their way! Im really looking forward to seeing what hes got in store for everyone also if the content is good i dont mind a few delays here and there plus he can only get better with time if he learns from any mistakes or hiccups he encounters.

It’s all great n all, but if i’m truely honest it’s not Scott Mclean I want supplying me with tut videos, it’s SA.
It’s weird cos I feel quite tratorous or ‘turning to the dark side’, watching other peoples tutorial videos haha, silly I know.
not your bog standard trance… but such a progressive and melodic vibe that sends me in another world.
GET A LOAD OF THIS!
this is what trance is all about man
U shudnt feel bad roben and also it shudnt matter who is supplying the tutorials. Get as much as you can from whoever is supplying it.
WELLLLLLLL
