Really loving his trashy disco infused style of house at the moment, really does great things on the dancefloors too!
(the dub is better but i can’t find the dub, katy perrys vocal makes it too cheesy)
Fair play
Is it me or is the site slow this morning
this would be good as armands stuff does always sound really banging, but he mainly samples old disco records or replays them at best
he is very open about this, as long as it grooves, nice philosophy
+1, loving this at the mo funky as…

That’s a good idea actually, maybe the tutorial could be based around old disco sampling and creating fresh 2010’s sounding tunes out of them in an AVH style.
I do agree about taking disco samples and making bangers. But some of AVH stuff is really self explanatory. The most obvious: FINAL EDITION - I Can Do It (Anyway You Want) (extended) - YouTube
LOL. Should be able to tell how to produce this song.
Also, I’m gonna take this opportunity to plug a couple of my own tracks here.
Kamei - Falling In Love (GMGN Remix)
Hype Machine
GMGN - On My Mind

There is a Tunes - Mixes - Podcasts section for that buddy lol
Cool sounds though
Are you actually sampling old disco records then or are you re-creating them?
Would be cool to hear your take on all this
Haha I know but we were talking about chopping up disco samples (first time I’ve ever heard it discussed here) and I couldn’t resist! Sorry!
Basically here’s the key components:
-The sample. You need a good sample. For that you need a lot of disco. I spend quite a bit of time listening to old disco records usually pitched up (like the French) to try and spot the more “housey” samples.
-The drums. Most typical of the french house stuff is to use 909 sounds, but really just try to make em bangin’. But you don’t want to clutter especially if the sample has drum sounds already. Be careful with this. Pinpoint warping is key here.
-The loops. Basically I go into the track knowing what my “key loops” are. Identified in the step above. Then I start to look for other interesting loops. I build my drums then just take a loop usually at 1 bar and just move along to different parts of the track, listening for interesting stuff or stuff to cut up and chop together.
Then take the steps above and combine with the following tools:
-Low Pass/Hi Pass Filters. Essential.
-Beat Repeat/Super Looper
-DBlue Glitch (free glitching tool, used a bunch)
-Synth. I usually try to add synth to tracks (like that Falling in Love one where I use my Roland Juno 106), but the synth needs to be the right notes, and add to the feel of the track and not clutter itself within the noise of the sample itself. Once again, can be tricky, you don’t want to force synth in to be “more original” if it just adds clutter and noise. But I’m a bit of a perfectionist and some producers like a ton of clutter.
But, then again there is still a ton for me to learn, but that’s what I know of so far. Listen to Louis La Roche as an even better example of someone who is just killing it with disco sampling. I couldn’t tell you how he does this exactly!

I’ve always liked AVH’s sound. Two of my all time favorite classic tracks are from him (You Don’t Know Me and Entra Mi Casa).
Check out these youtube videos showing how old disco cuts were sampled to make tracks like:
Lady, One More Time, and Groove Jet

Cheers for your replies rcorbo, really interesting read and it’s great to know that I’m not the only one here that is feeling the AVH sound (amongst other producers who are smashing it up at the moment)
Have you heard this?
Such sick stuff about at the moment.
Lets hope phil/bryan will cover all this sound

the first track is “there it is” by shalamar chopped up, second track i know but can’t place it.
both are quite nice, would deffo play them out.
RE: Van Helden. he’s always done these chopped up disco tracks, him and sneak - thinks like “funkphenom” etc… amazing stuff, it’s just come full circle.
It’s all about about the drum production and overlaying the basslines.

Chopped disco sample then heavy sidechain and beat repeater is the basis of the groove. It’s lovely stuff, the thing about La roche is the additional production he add in, the synths etc… very similar to the french styles of menace and co…
off the back of all this has anyone been checking thins blog?:http://www.french-express.com/
take this video and combine it with pretty much any of the sonic tuts and there you go.ive been spinning disco, funk, etc for about 15 years and been collecting rare vinyl even longer.if you want some suggestions on maybe lesser known artists let me know. btw any fans of duck sauce’s barbara streisand just check out boney m’s “gotta go home”.

Impressed that so many people are with me on this one, lets hope SA are up for getting a little funk on
Great video by the way Bobby, loved it! It’s quite similar really to those excellent sampling techniques used to create some of the Prodigy’s tunes.
