Hey folks,
I’d like to request a tutorial on making a particular type of contemporary hip-hop. I speak of “Beats” as it’s called in its current homeland of Los Angeles. Artists like Teebs, Kutmah, The Gaslamp Killer, Ras G, Dimlite, Computer Jay, New York’s Flying Lotus and Britain’s Hudson Mohawke and Blue Daisy are really forging new ground in heavy, dreamy-sounding breaks.
I understand there’s a lack of hip-hop / breaks tutorials here for various reasons (you guys are house-heads, copywritten samples cant be used, there’s already a lot of hip-hop tutorials online, lots of hiphop is made with hardware samplers / low end software), but this would be still worth doing cause it’s challenging, it offers a chance for the folks who did your French House course to further expand their mega-compression skills and above all, it’s a pretty popular style right now and I reckon it’d bring the hits!
Beats can be a tough genre to penetrate, but if a tutorial were to be done, I’d suggest the following as a starting point:
Artists: Flying Lotus / Blue Daisy
Tracks: “Tea Leaf Dancer” / “Space Ex”
