If you had?

It’s easy to build your dream studio in your head or on paper with an unlimited amount of cash but what if you had £50k, what would you have in your studio?

list your equipment, prices

i played this with a few of friends a while back and some managed to build a studio for less than £5k while others ran out of money.

oh and remember this has to include every thing. apart from the room

What about the accoustic treatment? Does that come into the cost?

If I had that amount of money for music I would hire a pro-studio with pro-engineers, produce a ****load of top tracks while learning all their ‘tricks’, then do performances all over the globe while raking it in.

How could anyone run outta money with a 50K budget??? Vintage synth dreamers!

yes mate, basically all you have is an empty room and £50k. so you need to choose flooring, furniture everything.

can’t include stuff you already have, for instance if you want ableton in your dream studio you have to add that to your price , samples everything

for instance if you wanted a mac pro for when your traveling and a power mac for the studio you would have probably already blown £8k before you’ve done anything.

a friend started off by picking things like a fairchild (best part of £30k gone in one hit)

hahaha no can’t do that, its just you, an empty room and £50k. no extras that you earn to carry on building later it has to be your perfect studio in one hit. for a lot of people this is easy but for some its not.

still working on my list

Hah! This is good Jon, i like it!

Im putting together a studio at the moment, for myself in our spare room which is pretty big! I think I will base it on that- no I dont have a 50K budget BUT the room which im creating now will be my dream studio… at a budget! lol.

Will update you soon

Need to do some research on this one

cool keeps us upto date with that

the reason we came up with the 50K is although its a large sum of money its not impossibly out of peoples reach. the two of my friends that i did this with have “wasted” (their own words) between £30-£70k over a twenty year period as dj/producers on bits that have even been resold, broken and/or stolen. so i asked them if they you had empty room and £50k again what would you drop it on and neither could answer with out blowing the budget.

only one person so far has said just a laptop, headphones, ableton, a vengeance sample cd, kettle, toster and a bean bag chair.

I know I would get a few more synths, some apogee gear, and a ton of outboard gear. Definately an SSL mixing console to boot and throw in some dope mics. A $10k Mac Pro and a series of monitors might be in there too!

Thats alot of money to list absolutely everything. Not to mention I would probably do a bit of construction. Like turn the closet into a recording booth and get some reinforced air conditioning to make it cooler, but not keep it in the room. You know.

I think it’s too easy to get all wrapped up with all the extra hardware, but in reality, as long as you have a good computer or mac, good speakers, a midi keyboard and a well treated room, that’s all you really need these days.

Albeit some software like Ableton or Logic and a couple of Synths of your choice.

If you really fancy spending out on the little extras, maybe a mixing desk wouldn’t do any harm. But really do you need all those hardware synths and compressors? Not REALLLY, although there is the argument they sound better, but you can still make sh*t hot sounding tunes without them.

why would you need a well treated room if you were using near field monitors ???

More for the bass response really, i mean i have the same issue in my little studio here. Maybe mostly because it is so little, bass sounds sound bassier than they really are.

Definitely need some bass traps, even with nearfield monitors, you’re still going to find some sonic issues in your room… depending on the size and shape of your room.

maybe ( i don’t know ) but i was always under the impression that near field monitors (if set up correctly) eliminated the need for acoustic treatment but i guess it couldn’t hurt.

This is easy. Me & my brother make music together so I am doubling up on some stuff.

1 Big A$$ Desk
2 Sweet A$$ Chairs
1 Super Mac Pro with dual monitors.
1 Set of Mackie Monitors.
2 Super Mac Book Pros
2 Copies of Ableton
2 Copies of Cubase
2 Copies of Logic
2 Copies of Tracktor
2 Jazzmutant Lemurs
2 APC 40s
1 Yamaha Midi Controller (the 1 that Erez plays from Infected Mushroom)
1 Paul Reed Smith Custom 24
2 Pioneer CDJ 2000s
1 Pioneer DJM 2000
2 Pioneer HDJ 2000 Headphones
1 Guitar Rig Setup
1 Line 6 POD X3 Pro Guitar Multi Effects Processor
1 Yamaha 02R96VCM Digital Mixing Console

Thats everything I would ever need. Minus a bunch of vst plugins.

However I am still like 10-15k under budget.

Who couldnt make music with that list?
