I am SO happy to have read the words of a modern, young producer like T47 when he says things like “…You need some kind of rules, you need some kind of direction, otherwise you’re going in all kinds of places.”
After reading this and other areas like that in the interview which I am sure you can find for yourself, I am completely convinced T47 knows what music is and how it’s supposed to be made/performed. I have thought about this for a long time as a growing, learning and finally professional classical musician, and am THRILLED to see someone in the electronic realm thinking along these lines as well.
I know most are looking in the article for how he creates the sounds and the techniques and what he records and how he EQS and whatever else…but the REAL gem of this article is his compositional MINDSET. He knows music is inherently distracting, and he set very specific goals and focused on those only!
It’s like the great Igor Stravinsky, who in his fabulous book Poetics of Music said this of his workflow and process:
"Use something definite. Something solid and concrete that can form the basis for a “resisting foundation.” In other words, place limitations on the elements so as to NOT become confused or distracted by the limitless possibilities music has to offer. Choose the boundaries. Freedom is found in moving about within a narrow frame of action, surrounded by obstacles… The more art is controlled, worked over, and limited…the more it is free."
Don’t be distracted by the way T47 works the technology. Rather, ponder his MINDSET.
MAD respect for him after reading this.

i love this part:
Freedom is found in moving about within a narrow frame of action, surrounded by obstacles… The more art is controlled, worked over, and limited…the more it is free.
its a good mindset to have to understand structure enough to tear it all down.
That is exactly correct. It is incredible how much work needs to be done to get a truly worthwhile musical end-result. Focus and decision making based on knowledge and concentration are simply crucial to a quality track. Period.
