Just wondering how everyone gets their inspiration in terms of writing a track. This is currently one of my main issues. Just wondering whether most people start a project with no idea of what they are going to do and just try stuff out or whether they have some ideas in their minds they want to test out.
If the latter, how do you go about coming up with these ideas?
Think this could be quite a useful topic if people want to get involved.
I listen to music i like and try to emulate it. Have a good listen to the tracks you choose and try to work out where events take place ( builds breaks e.t.c ) … i also draw a map of how i want my sound to progress might not work for everyone but i does for me !
Think we all suffer from lack of inspiration from time to time.
This is why I love Live 7, you can throw bits together in the Session window and things pop out sometimes (or not).
Also what i will do is listen to tracks that have a similar sound to where i’m heading and think of what they’ve done with the track, what they’ve added, etc. That can spur my own ideas. It also helps in the way that you may listen to your track and be thinking that there is something ‘missing’ but you can’t put your finger on what, then when you listen to another similar track, that ‘missing something’ might be added to the other track and push your thoughts towards what you’re after.
Other ways for example lately im working on a remix, and I love the tribal techy sound, the original track is electro, so with that view in mind, i know where i’m heading and making it a tribal techy re-work.
I would have to agree… Everyone from one time or another lacks inspiration. I often have this big problem with my bass lines and trying to figure them out. Mostly with mimicking a specific pattern that I hear in another track and whatnot. But when I am feeling less inspired, I really like to listen to another form of music. Specifically, I love to listen to classic rock, listen to the riffs for my stab ideas, and listen to the bass guitar for the bass lines. If you listen to Pink Floyd, you can get some great ideas for pad sounds in their music.
