I went with a friend to the dutch version of pc world to get him a new laptop for producing he said he didnt want a mac but a pc. So were there looking and we find a laptop more powerfull than a macbook pro and cheaper so he was happy. The only thing is his audio interface is a MOTU 828 which has a firewire connection. So i ask the sales guy to be sure if it had a firewire slot and he pretty much said no new laptops or pc have firewire slots and that firewire is pretty much dead! I couldnt believe this i though most high end audio stuff goes through firewire? Or is everything going via usb these days. This was a bit of a shocker really for someone whos always been told usb is **** and firewire is the way to go.
Firewire is more of a mac thing as far as I’m aware but with new technology i think even mac are deciding to slowly drop the firewire
when it came to USB 2.0 or FIREWIRE the firewire was the better option. although they both had roughly the same transfer speed firewire carried less interference and less signal Noise making it a better option for Music.
So whats the new firewire? If its better than usb 2.0 is there a usb 3?
yes there is a usb 3, but it is still new but it is being implemented slowly but surely. I dont think firewire is dead, but it being replaced over the course of time. Firewire 400 was slightly faster then USB 2.0, but firewire 800 is double that of 400. I dont know how fast USB 3.0 is though.
Just seems a shame that PCs are not putting firewire 800 in em anymore especially on laptops it will be interesting to see what connections forthcoming hardware will use. Its also another clear sign of if you wana do anyhing creative buy a mac!
yeah lots of news going around that apple and intel are about to roll out light peak next year, 10gbit transfer speed O_O, although it still cant replace video connectors as of now.
I’ve read the odd bit here and there that says USB3 can go up to 10Gb + which smashes Firewire, even with any interference. It’s never as fast as they say though but even a lot lower than that is still probably pretty good.
I think firewire is on the way out yet, although there’s still plenty of laptops out there with the connection on it.
You say that about there still being plenty of laptops with the firewire connection but here in Holland it seems like youv got more chance finding anti drugs activists.
