P-Shot (16/08/2011)
Future Music and Music Tech are both great mags for info on the latest technology. I’m currently reading the Dance Music Manual, and Secrets of House Music Production. Very good reads
I just got the Dance Music Manual as well. It is very good. How is the Secrets of House Music Production?
Apparantly theres a more updated DMM2 coming out but no one knows when lol. I think the info is good but it tries to cover a lot of stuff so it cant go into intricate details. I do think its an essential read tho and highly reccomend everyone to read it. Sometimes you find that something you read can seem really confusing but watching those things being done in a practical setting can make everything clear. Also what a lot of people do is that they read all these books and watch all these tutorials and then do nothing. You HAVE to work along side whatever it is your studying. I mean think back to secondary school english lessons. Now imagine your teacher teaching you as they did and you reading over whatever it is that you are being taught. Now imagine that you never had to write or do anything yourself. You wouldnt fully grasp the subject. This goes for ANY thing that you try to learn and its essential that you apply a practical side to whatever it is someone is trying to teach you.
I’ll tell ye Lads… I probably have every book going…
DMM - Forget about it.
Get the sample magic book
&
Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki - Focal Press.
The Izhaki book is essentially a glossary of music production sh!t & is a lot more indepth about production in general than the DMM. Its not dance specific - but in terms of "How do the controls on this do. " etc… You just cannot beat it as a reference. Dont get me wrong, it aint a bottomless pit of info either - but its not as 1D as the DMM.
The DMM has nothing like that - which lets face it, as you progress, you need to find out.
The DMM isnt a book that you can read once and expect immediate results. Its a book you really have to study, read over a few times and try out what it teaches you. It has some great fundemental ideas amd concepts and the author is an accomplished dance music producer so he knows what hes talking about. The only problem is that dance music has changed so much and some things may be dated. Make sure that you use what he teaches you as a foundation to build upon.
Also if you want a fun read about pretty much everything when it comes to making music with a computer then search google for the Tweakheadz guide.

SHMP & MA FTW :D
HaHa… I thought the DMM was good and it gets rave reviews everywhere online. But I haven’t learned enough about the technical aspects of everything yet to know what is outdated. I will have to check out the Sample Magic Book.
Im gonna have to disagree with you ICN mate, ive read the sample magic book and I enjoyed it but I domt think anyone should be put off the DMM as its also a great read IMHO. I mean the DMM was the first thing I read when I ‘wanted’ to learn how to produce and a lot of it seemed like it was written in chinese. But I re read it after being in the world of production for a few years and it seemed to make a lot more sense. Also the sample magic book is great if you want to learn how to produce House. The DMM tries to cover alot more…
Also the sample magic book claims to expose secrets but theres alot of ‘so called’ secret stuff that isnt even touched upon…
To anyone reading this scratching their head at which one to get - Buy the SM book first.
If you want to read something else & have money to spare - sure, buy the DMM.
The title gives it a standing, that up til recently -it deserved, because there was nothing else like it.
Its more a guide or index, than a manual.
The secrets of house music production? There probably are no secrets - but in comparison of tips / techniques with the DMM - there is zilch in the DMM (for all its word count). I’ll be honest, I think when you are starting out - it seems good… but in terms of technique, which lets face it, thats what people want - there is a void.
At the emd of the day it will only do you good to read both, the sample magic book is definately more up to date but its very focused on House which may not be your cup of tea. Id actually say if yoir just starting out the sample magic book is best as it really holds your hand and walks you through everything.
The DMM is written a bit more in a complicated way, it assumes you know a bit I feel even tho its aimed at a complete beginner. It can all seem a bit textbookish at times and is more like a manual written to say format your pc then an ikea manual which is kinda what the sample magic book is. But both are very good reads…
I dont know about you guys but I just cannot ever concentrate sitting through 5 mins let alone hours of reading manuals and watching tuts… I just fall sleepy or go off into my own world which sucks cause I know thats where the valuable info is at.
One of the only tuts I fully sat through was Jamie’s Melody tut in the tips and tricks section, and it definately taught me a lot.
Most of what I learn comes through fudging about on Ableton + Massive and looking at feedback people give to other peoples tracks as well as my own tracks (again lots thanks for those who take time to give feedback to others, especially when its on my tracks :P) and reading these forums (other forums really do suck at times IMO, just kind find the same willingness to help elsewhere as you do here!).
I just find info from other musicians the best type of info I can get, and I find playing around with what you have just as vital…
Dont know how you guys do the tuts and books thing though, really puts me to sleep for some reason. Next month im moving on to my second year of pharmacy, I cant do 5 min tuts on a subject I am eager to learn about how am I gonna study for that lol! Am screwed…

Tl;dr: A bunch of useless crap I wrote…
i feel for you man. I know the feeling when you study too much that books starting to make you feel sleepy and bored.
but if you really do love Music Productions you will need to make it some time to read Manuals.
I know what you mean, I honestly do keep giving it a try, I have about 30 bookmarked youtube vids right now and every now and then I will open one up and start dozing off again lol.
One day hopefully I will get through one of those tuts/manuals and then I will prolly forget what I just went through anyway
More power to those who can though! To me thats a very respectable thing.
The ability to sit down and study is something I could never ever do regarding any subject really.

Mate - Forums are great, that was my point… but theres some amount of sh!t written on them too.
Many people have poor writing skills & give wrong or inacurate info.
Then add to that your own personal interpretation of the meaning of words… Theres a lot that can go wrong inbetween. I really wouldnt rely on that source exclusively for info. You are limiting yourself too, only getting the info that is there - rather than getting a complete picture.
College work should have introduced you to that concept by now
Aside from that, lets face it - the majority of members here dont post & fewer actually post tips. They just dont. Whether its a confidence thing or selfishness - Who knows? Toss a coin :D
