I’ve spent some time dabbling, and more just looking for comments on what I’ve done wrong (or of course if I’ve done something right ). Be quite aware that there’s a fair bit of plagiarism of the trance tutorial in there (I used the structure as a starting point to try out a bit of it), and I’m quite aware that it’s not the best thing in the world, but I really want to improve, and the only way that’s going to happen is by people gritting their teeth, listening to what I’ve done, and letting me know what I can do to improve. I apologise if that’s all sickeningly self-deprecating, but this is the first thing I’ve let other people listen to who are likely to give me an honest and critical response, the wife’s always going to be happy if I’m enjoying myself
Nice to hear a good melodic trance track here at SA. Its been a while.
I wouldn’t worry about plagiarism, I mean its near impossible to make a melodic trance track sound completely original these days but I think you’ve done enough to call it your own.
My only criticism of the track is the piano riff which seems a bit rigid. I think if you changed some of the note velocities here and there by very small amounts it would make it far more emotional by giving it a human touch.
That would accentuate the riff and make it even more pretty which is what melodic trance is all about imo.
As always feel free to ignore any armchair advice I offer. lol
hey m8 well done on the track! the riff is good but defo needs to be cleaned up …it seems to over power your mix like jon said- too much reverb i think on the piano but overall a really good effort man
I’m still getting used to getting the levels right, I guess it’s something that gets a lot easier with experience (of course I could just use the excuse that I’ve got to keep the monitors down at night to let the little 'un sleep, but that’d be dodging the bullet a bit). I’ll get it up a bit louder later and see if I can get them a bit better, any advice on things to spot?
My gut instinct when doing it was to bring another instrument in to lead, but after a few tries it sounded a) a bit cheesy (might just be me), b) a bit overcomplicated. Although my gut’s still telling me I should put something there, I still need to figure out what.
Piano riff’s my own, after a while finally found a few techniques that get my imagination working. I’ll have a bash at making it a bit more human next weekend, and then clean up the mix and see how it sounds.
Once again, cheers for all the advice guys, really appreciate it.
if you can get your mixes sounding nice a tight (always compare to other tracks) at lower volumes then it’s always gonna sound better pumped out in a club.
if it sounds low and rumbling at lower volumes or even medium volumes, its going to sound like a big flabby mess in a club.
Spent a little time on this and reuploaded it, haven’t got the mix right yet I don’t think, but imo it sounds a lot better than it did. Pulled the reverb out and played with the piano a bit, and changed a couple of the fx which didn’t quite feel right, and finally added a bell onto the piano after the break - think with the reverb pulled out it stands out a lot better in the mix. Might spend a little more time on the piano (still sounds a bit wooden in places), or I might just move on and come back to it later
