Probably a standard question/s so apologies in advance!
I know there are no rules as such to music but are there set keys for different genres of music i.e. if I were to write a techno track should I be looking around the A minor instead of C major and vica verser if I were writing a trace track I’d be look at C major.
What about if I were writing an electro track? Is there a standard key to a particular genre?
Second part of my question is are most tracks written with either major or minor scales? Not that I’ve looked at other scales but I’m wondering whether I need to be bothered with our scales at my stage?
I don’t think there is any standard key to each genre, in fact it is good to have a good key progression in a mix. If all the tracks in DJ set were in the same key it would probably sound a bit boring.
As for Major and minor, according to Mixed in Keys on my tracks about 80% are minor, and they are House, tech house techno etc (not Trance).
the key doesnt matter at all, just ignore it unless youve got someone singing on the track and you need to write to their vocal range.
key tonality is another question tho… (maj or min etc)
