Kick /sub/ bass

Just thinking about the many ways ive come up with over the years and just wanted to see what all you guys esp tech heads do theirs .

Ill kick of with what seems to me to be one of  phatest low end processes i use :

I start with the kick i view it with an analyzer making sure the meat of the kick isnt to low , then i grab a sine wave from a synth and put it a Fith or a seventh up from the kick then switch through wave forms and program to taste

From there i smash another sine wave an octave lower this seems to give a seriously phat sound !!

I also like to have a fan type of image in my head… sub = mono (0%) ,kick ill tend to have at about 20% wider  then higher bass a little bit wider say 30% and go from there wider with each synth part

Fire of what processes you guys go through !!

Not sure if its as technicnal & you want Mate… but this is what I do.

My K&B is always as simple as I can get away with. The more complicated it is, I dont know what I’m doing anymore.

I like to use a 909 kick - nearly always. Stick it as audio on the arrange.

Watch where the waveform starts to slope down & start placing bass after that & messing about with the groove.

One thing that I like the sound of is: A Sine… draw in 1/4 notes or 1/8’s for a bar. Then assign an envelope to the Pitch & fk around with it & the transpose until something fits. In Logic’s EXS24, you can assign all sorts of things to different stuff. I’ll assign a LFO to the pitch as well. Dont know if thats overkill - but its a case of transposing it down until something fits. The Notes have a bounce or a g (roove to them.

Then I might duplicate the track & delete 2 & 4 from Track 1 - and only have 2 & 4 on Track 2.

I’ll change the LFO/Pitch Envelope settings slightly on the Duplicate track… so that theres a different groove. Just keep messing until it sounds ok. You could duplicate the track as many times as you wanted.

Then I’'ll adjust the Amp envelope to get it as tight as I can.

If it gets to a stage where I’m still interested in the track, I’ll probably bounce it to Audio & compare them to the Kicks. I’ll put in fades where I can.

You’ve given me some tips before for compressing Kicks & I use that on everything. Also layering basses… like a chord… do that now all the time too (or try to :hehe: )

**** guys i used to layer kicks but ive given up on that. at the mo i like to just parallel compress them

nothing in comparison to yours lol

Thats interesting thats how i usually do things in live - for quick programming i just duplicate tracks, say bass, then i can deactivate the bass notes in live this gives me a visual of where my bass is without the notes playing then i input notes on the next track so they don’t clash and make them as tight or as long as they need to be !!

Thats a good idea.

Theres a similar thing in Logic. You can select all the Midi tracks & double click. It all opens up in the one piano roll.
