Knowing Me, Knowing You

Ok so we all chat here and i’d like to think we all get on.

Anyways I thought it would be nice to all share a little about ourselves, our interests, hobbies, work, etc.

Tell us about what else you enjoy doing apart from producing? Gym? Tai chi? Learning languages? Martial arts? Whatever.

Do you DJ? Did you used to DJ? Were / Are you in a band? Tell us about your performing side.

How did you get into production?

Do you go clubbing? Did you used to go clubbing? How did you first get into the club / event /festival thing?

Are you married? Do you have kids? Are you divorced?

Where do you live? Where did you used to live?

etc etc etc

Lets use this thread as an opportunity to learn more about each other and who we are behind the text.

I like long walks on the beach. Im an Aquarius. My favorite color is blue. ISO… uhhh…

Ok…here we go with the real answer!

Other then producing, I like watching movies and going to the gym. I also like to kick it with my dog when I have him and go to the dog park.

I used to DJ a long time ago. I spun Trance and then moved to House music. Then to Happy Hardcore, then back to house and stuck there.

I dont do the club scene anymore. I got involved with electronic music when I started going to Raves in the late 90’s. i actually threw 2 raves too. I have traveled all over for festivals and raves too.

Im currently married, but going through a divorce. No kids, thank god. Originally from Cleveland Ohio, and moved to Orlando Florida (Mickey Mouse land).

You mean like the biography section of your profile Rob

Q - Tell us about what else you enjoy doing apart from producing?

A - Running (4.45 per KM b*tches! I love my Nike+), Gym, Just started Yoga, play soccer, about to join a dodgeball league because it’s SO north american (and I’ve just moved to Canada) and I had to try it.

I also watch heaps of films and I’m in the infant stages of starting my own tshirt label.

I used to do Senshido but there’s no where over here to do it.

I’m also going to learn French to get more points towards my immigration application over here.

As you can tell I like to keep busy.

Q - Do you DJ? Did you used to DJ? Were / Are you in a band? Tell us about your performing side.

A - I used to DJ in the UK - wasn’t that bad, warmed up for a few big names etc but then started travelling (4 years ago) and haven’t had decks since then. Funky house was my weapon of choice but my first ever gig was a hard house gig… please don’t tell anyone.

Q - How did you get into production?

A - A Reason tutorial and a copy from a mate got me into it. I then learned that and got tired of lack of instruments. I saw a demo of an early release of Sylenth on youtube and decided I needed Ableton in my life. Best ever decision.

Q - Do you go clubbing? Did you used to go clubbing? How did you first get into the club / event /festival thing?

A - I used to go ALL the time when I was a nipper, now I rarely go out clubbing. Pub with mates is much more preferred

Q - Are you married? Do you have kids? Are you divorced?

A - No, No, No. Why, are you hitting on me?

Q - Where do you live? Where did you used to live?

A - Canada. I used to live in New Zealand, Australia and also various places in England.

Here goes then ,

Im 34 live in london ive been married for 6 years (very scary)

Apart from the music thing i do really boring stuff like dinner parties and cookoffs ,i also thought until a couple of weeks ago i was able to do tricks on a skateboard which resulted im me having to wear a sling for 3 months due to the fact i smashed my collarbone to pieces…foolio!

I do dj/live sets for quite a few sound systems  in and around london ,

I got into djing from an early age really, i left home at 15 and moved into a squat where i met a collective of djs /producers called spiral tribe in amongst the madness i met a dude called mad jim he was in band (s)called loop guru/headbutt ,and he always used to bring me to the studio when his band(s)were rehersing.so i learned loads about live recording from them .From there i got heavily into psy trance and ended up working /djing for aquarius records (the best job ever)and got the full on dance music bug…

My fav festivals are glastonbury (try 2 go every year )bestival  ,womad

This stuff makes me feel like im applying for a job lol

Well, probably about time i joined in with this shambles… Roben you perve delving into peoples lifes… lol :stuck_out_tongue:

Q - Tell us about what else you enjoy doing apart from producing?

A - Hmm lets see… Im part of a 5-a-side football team on a Monday and Thursday nights, like going to the GYM to keep fit, watching TV, going out with friends having a few drinks, meeting new people. I have recently been watching a lot of movies and collecting DVD box sets which is pretty cool (HMV have some bargains lol). I enjoy running too, last year i did the 10K Run for Cancer Research and next year hopefully will be doing then half marathon… lots of hard training but will be well worth it.

I do a lot of design work too for clients, flyers, business cards, logo development and websites. I make sure that, that doesn’t take up too much of my time thou as it can be quite time consuming.

lol, this you will laugh at BUT im going to say it anyways… for years, i have set myself a little mission. I love HedKandi (Have a tattoo on my back too) and im currently trying to collect every single CD ever made by the HedKandi Team, right from the beginning to present day… huge task, wasting a lot of money too, but i see it as a good investment. Some of the earlier cds cost fortune… lol, one of which cost me in excess of £60  keeps me out of trouble thou.

And lastly, im currently looking to get into the specials (which you all know) and hopefully progress into the fully fledged police force in the future.

Q - Do you DJ? Did you used to DJ? Were / Are you in a band? Tell us about your performing side.

A - Yeah, DJ all the time. Taken a bit of a step back at the moment as i have had an operation on my back, but before and after, i have been gigging almost every weekend which is quality. Get to meet lots of new people and blast my fave tunes out!

I started out when i was 17, my mate wanted a party in this field and i had been contemplating getting decks for some time so took the plunge and purchased a complete setup with my savings which my mum and dad had been putting to one side for when i was 18… ended up having it early hah. From there, i used to just do mates parties and house parties. Finally got my first residency a year later in a pub/club called The Bank Corner where i used to do a Saturday night, playing to 300+ people. Soon after that, received my second residency on a Friday night at a pub/club called The Arms which was playing too 200+ people (a little more intimate which was a good atmosphere). My residency at the Bank Corner lasted about a year or so because The Arms wanted to take me on full time (Friday and Saturday Nights) so that happened… Then, when i was about 21, i lost that residency due to the place being taken over by some hag that wanted to turn the place into a bikers and grunge hideout lol, the whole place soon went down the pan, believe me. In between all of that and now, i have played for a variety of promoters across the UK, had the pleasure of playing in some fantastic clubs too (BAR360, Sachmoes and Sankeys) to name but a few and with some fantastic people. Entered some good competitions too, which has helped me to get noticed a lot more and given me the chance to expand on my skills. (there is a lot more detail but thought i would keep it short enough)

Q - How did you get into production?

A - The idea of production i have been toying with for some months… there is only so far that word of mouth and DJ’ing physically can take you… So, thought it was about time that i purchased the equipment and got down to it. A good friend of mine introduced me to Ableton and what equipment i needed.

Q - Do you go clubbing? Did you used to go clubbing? How did you first get into the club / event /festival thing?

A - Even at the age of 23, i have slowed down lol. Dont know what it is really, i think when you have been DJ’ing for so long, when you go out somewhere you think to yourself “god i wish i was DJ’ing here instead” so sometimes, i just dont go out. I always save myself thou for BIG nights out like Sankeys and The Warehouse Project, Manchester which i will be visiting at least 5 times from now to christmas.

Sometimes, i much prefer just to head down the local with the lads.

Q - Are you married? Do you have kids? Are you divorced?

A - Nope, Nope and Nope!

Q - Where do you live? Where did you used to live?

A - I currently live in the bright lights of Manchester :stuck_out_tongue:

my missus is from burnage !

Theres a blast from the past man back to the planet ! megadog e.t.c … good ol days hahaha

Went to see Megadog once in Dublin… I “think” I enjoyed myself!

Man Back to the Planet and Spiral Tribe, proper blasts from the past, when raves were raves, and clubs were for slags and thugs! (Maybe no change there eh!)

Daydream by BTTP is one of my all time faves and Forward the Revolution by Spiral Tribe.

Me I’m from Bristol, small town called Chipping Sodbury, which in fact should be fairly well known to anyone from the free party scene, Circus Warp etc. The infamous Castle Morton was meant to be held there (gutted it wasn’t).

Anyway:

Tell us about what else you enjoy doing apart from producing? Gym? Tai chi? Learning languages?

I was a life long skater till I got way too old for it, other than dance music that was my other true passion. I trained as a journalist, and started writing for magazines when I was 16 (waaaaaaaaaay back in the 90s) if anyone remembers Eternity, Dream or Knowledge magazines, I wrote for them.

That has now become my passion again, and I write for my own website as well as a few others (datatransmission.co.uk, redhotvelvet.co.uk) and soon back in the magazines (More on this once it’s in print).

Do you DJ? Did you used to DJ? Were / Are you in a band? Tell us about your performing side.

I wanted decks since age 14, but for some reason god only knows I waited until about 2/3 years ago (I kinda fell out of love with music in the early 2000s)

I’m trying to make up for it now, but when I was younger I was in the thick of the scene and knew loads of people. So much harder these days.

How did you get into production?

I actually got into production much sooner. A DJ mate of mine (Vinyl Junkie) had a sampler and an Atari and I’d go round there with things I wanted sampling etc.

A few years later (after that came to nothing) I bought a Roland TR808, swapped it for an MC505 (the fool that I am) and then sold that and got an EMU ESI32 and a novation K-Station. None of which I ever really learnt how to use due to no internet/sonic academy and no-one else I know doing it.

So that faded out till about the same time I bought decks, I had some total revival it seems.

Do you go clubbing? Did you used to go clubbing? How did you first get into the club / event /festival thing?

Used to go raving all the time from 94 - 1999, used to review events like Dreamscape, Helterskelter etc. Been all over the country for raves like Great Yarmouth, Edinburg, Rhyl, Cornwall and Kent without doubt the best days of my life.

The rise of trendy clubbing kinda killed all that off though. I loved events where it was all about pumping tunes and getting sweaty, there seems to be less of that now (or is it just age :P)

Are you married? Do you have kids? Are you divorced?

Not married, no kids, girlfriend of 7 years though.

Where do you live? Where did you used to live?

Lived in Bristol, Valencia in Spain, and now London.

…wicked blasts from the past hahaha

These are great guys! Really enjoyed reading them all.

Got sh*t loads to do today so when I get some free time i’ll write back with my shizzle, too much to write!!

Tell us about what else you enjoy doing apart from producing? Gym? Tai chi? Learning languages? Martial arts? Whatever.

I go to the gym every week as well as kickboxing, have a black belt in freestyle taekwondo and did mauy thai boxing for 5 years. I actually was an assistant instructor for a few months till i left due to not agreeing with their BS and conny sales techniques.

I love watching films and various tv series like Sparticus - Blood and Sand, Deadliest Warrior, Born Survivor, Stand up comedy and various other things that may be on the Discovery, Bravo, Comedy Central and Dave channels.

Otherwise I don’t really watch TV that much, I don’t like to watch the news as there is never any good news.

I read magazines Future Music, Focus and Mens Health and love learning new things.

I manage the South Coast UK for Tilllate.com who are a leading nightlife and events website and national magazine. I used to do loads of club photography but prefer my staff to do that.

I play Battlefield Bad Company 2 way too much!

Also love going out for dinners! I tend to do that quite a lot.

I also used to work for local and well known House record label called ‘Born To Dance’,

Do you DJ? Did you used to DJ? Were / Are you in a band? Tell us about your performing side.

Been DJing professionaly for over 6 years, played pretty much all the major clubs across the whole of the south coast Uk as well as a handful over the rest of the UK and abroad. I’ve headlined Honeyclub before as well as having played there and Digital in Brighton more times than I can count, also various times in London for places like Pacha, The Cross, etc. However these days I tend to steer away from the London scene due to not agreeing to their promoters ‘rent-a-crowd’ & ticket selling polices.

I’ve run nights in the past and currently part run a promotion called New York Loft Party.

I’ve been doing a radio show for Passion since 2005, my show ‘Eclectic’ ran for 2 years before changing it to the New York Loft Party radio show & podcast which airs on Passion as well as various stations across the globe and is up on iTunes every week.

I receive more music promos a week than i can bare to think about, it takes up too much of my time trying to sift through them all, although i don’t complain being that I rarely ever need to buy music due to this reason.

How did you get into production?

Just through a massive love of music, I always find my self having ideas in my head and it used to frustrate me not being able to put those ideas down. I found SA and finally managed to learn to digitally produce.

Do you go clubbing? Did you used to go clubbing? How did you first get into the club / event /festival thing?

Way too much, but usually because i’m already DJing or otherwise it’s great networking opportunity.

I first got into clubbing around 1999 where i’d go to this club called ‘The Monastery’ which was in Torquay, Devon. It was in an old church and would be on from midnight till 7am, was epic! The best times ever.

Are you married? Do you have kids? Are you divorced?

No No No although I do live with my girlfriend, her brother and cat.

Where do you live? Where did you used to live?

I currently live in Brighton which I love, been here 4 years now and can’t see me moving. I used to live in Exeter for a couple of years and before that I grew up in Torquay from the age of 8. Prior to this I was from Elgin in Scotland.

Moved out of my home away from my parents when i was 14 to live with a foster family, once i reach 15 they kicked me out so went to live with my older brother (only two years older) who taught me how to live as a person. He looked after me until i started to sell my drawings and paintings and get paid to dj and actually found a way of making money. met a girl had a child with her, my little girl died at 7 months old this was all before my 17th birthday. i didn’t really cope to well after that and kinda went on a 7-8 year bender (managed to pay for a house and car through dj-ing work and other bits lol) and lost it all or gave it away when i met my wife. when i got with the girl i’m with now i went back to my ex girl friends house and spoke to her about things told her all i wanted was my record collection and my decks so i signed the house, car, savings and walked away with two decks a mixer and records.

after a while with my new girlfriend i got married had kids and i’ve now got another one on the way. i managed to go through uni, opened my own dj shop & studio got into teaching for a while (also at a local community center) i guess after djing every week 2-4 times a week from the age of 15-16 to mid to late 20’s i lost my passion for it. really happy with my live at the moment and i’m looking forward to what the future holds.

Roben, you’re a sweaty sock?!? Shame, I used to think you were a good fella

Just kidding, technically I’m Welsh (no accent and didn’t grow up there) so I’m racially handicapped!

Tell us about what else you enjoy doing apart from producing? Gym? Tai chi? Learning languages? Martial arts? Whatever.

I like hanging out with my daughter and wife whenever I can. Other than that it’s cooking, playing games, camping, threatening to start surfing again, or just haning out with my buddies

Do you DJ? Did you used to DJ? Were / Are you in a band? Tell us about your performing side.

I used to do the band thing all the way from jr. high up through the college-ish years and beyond. Used to make mixtapes when I was a kid and I ran a show called Radio: Destructo on a now defunct internet radio station, but aside from about six months ago I never did the EDM “set” style DJing which I’m really starting to like…

How did you get into production?

I always dug the creative aspect of music not so much the performance aspect. playing shows was awesome don’t get me wrong, i just loved writing. after the last band i was in folded, my musical mentor finally got me into home recording. he set me up with some of the gear i still use today lol(6 years later). I was pumped because now i could just create and write and not worry about all the douchebaggery that comes with being in a band. After 6 years producing just kind of spaced out harder rock stuff, i noticed everything that i was writing was getting very electronic. So when i heard about Ableton I checked it out and ended up more interested in making house music as I’ve always loved it, but never had the means to make and perform it. I booted up Ableton for my first time and had no clue what to do. After a few you tubes i found Sonic Academy. i was plugging in my credit card number for a subscription here about 10 minutes later. and the rest is history…sorta…

Do you go clubbing? Did you used to go clubbing? How did you first get into the club / event /festival thing?

Been to a few clubs and a few smaller raves years back and Coachella in2002, and this past year.

Are you married? Do you have kids? Are you divorced?

I am married I do have a 2 year old daughter.

Where do you live? Where did you used to live?

I live in Huntington Beach, California. Sandwiched between LA and San Diego so I’ve got a bit of a drive
for decent shows. Everything around me is reggae reggae reggae…but not roots, it’s all the corny whiteboy Sublime style stuff. not my cup of tea. So when I do start playing out, I’ll be driving to LA becuase there’s a lot more clubs up there
