Label doubts

right lads - a label who i sent some tracks to as a demo have said they want to release them .

sounds great

says i to him “do you want me to send you a wav of each track at -6db for mastering etc?”

they said no.

what i sent them were 320bit mp3s with a limiter on the master out to beef it up, fully expecting that this would be removed when and if i had to send a label the tracks again as WAVs if they were to be released.

i havent had any of my own stuff released before , just a couple of remixes , and that was the process followed.

this time, while i am delighted to have the chance to get some of my own stuff out there, something about it seems a bit odd.

tbh the tracks are a few weeks/months old and im working on new/better stuff all the time so its not like these 3 tracks are my only hope - in a few months time i will be looking back and thinking that they are rubbish anyway.

the oldest one i sent them i already think is a bit crap ( not that im prepared to throw together any old rubbish - im just a harsh self critic)

what i mean is im not too bothereed about the tracks they have so it might be worth leting them chuck them out just to get the ball rollling.

i already notice the difference at havin a couple remixes out here - people seem to take it all a bit more seriously than before (i think anyway)

so- opinions please people? any and all thoughts gratefully accepted

have seen similar threads on here before but i would love to know what ye all think

I’ve no experience of it Mate… but I can see where you’re coming from if you think that the sound quality is not where you want it to be.

You’ll probably never be 100% happy with anything, but what you’ve described there to me is the equivalent of Picasso signing a deal with Art.com, for them to bang out colour photocopies to customers.

I’ve heard a few Guys saying that they look back on their early stuff with a bit of embarrassment… thats only to be expected I’d say. They’ll have usually ended up going in a different direction or just “got better” over time. But I’m sure they’ve sent off .wav’s to begin with. However, maybe your tracks do sound good enough, and you are being harsh on yourself. Might be worth running it by someone who was up to speed on that. Surprising that they dont want a .wav though?!?!? :w00t:

But if you feel that its not 100% right & you’re not 100% happy, then theres your answer. The gut always gives the best advice.

who is zeee label?

check on the online shops and make sure they back stuff released!

How big is the label?

With everything i’ve done so far i have sent an unmastered wav, mastered by myself wav, full 320 (just to make the package) plus remix package and for those that requested a radio edit / tv edit

Now i know for a fact beatport request mastered wavs and then mp3 the tunes themselves so i assume all the other download sites do the same

This doesnt seem as professional as you require and i’d look elsewhere especially if you are not happy with your tracks and want to push further

well they reckon its to sell through beatport, so thats interesting that they dont want me to send a wav just mp3…hmmmmm

dunno

they have only realy sent vague details so far, no mention of money or anything like that. but i had the tracks as free downloads on my soundcloud anyway, so im not expecting to make money from them at the moment. they just said to disable SC downloads and they wd come back to me

and communication via google translate doesnt help too much either!

Ask them for a contract before you go any further that states all of your concerns

Where it will be released, when, how long they will hold the copyright for, is it just digital, will they try and licence it out etc

how they promo is also a good thing to ask. Sometimes it can be worth it if the label has big names supporting it who will hear and play your tunes.

+1, defo do your research on them! Seems weird they didn’t require a .wav from you???

thanks guys, those are all good points - ill follow up with the guy and let you know what happens

i got on to them and theyre gonna send a contract tomorrow

so ill wait and see what it says

heres some of the bits im not sure about - maybe someonce can help with what they mean

* Duration of the contract: Five (5) years from the date of release

( this is for the specific tracks - is this a normal timeframe?)

Basically they hold copyright of the tune for 5 years. thats pretty normal some labels request 25 … the one we just signed to wanted it for 25 and we negotiated to 17

and i dont get paid until my share adds up to $50

is that normal?

the rest seems straightforward enough

yeh thats normal as beatport and most other download sites don’t pay a label until they meet a certain quota for the quarter

thanks mate
