I’m not sure what I did wrong, but when I downloaded ableton live 8, I’m missing a lot of Instruments that I’m seeing in tutorials. For example, the “Sampler” folder is nonexistant, and all the folders, (drum rack, impulse, etc.) have a far smaller selection of files. Is there any particular reason for this, and how do I get all of them?

yeah that sometimes happens if you download the wrong torrent 
I didn’t torrent it, I downloaded the free trial. Maybe that has something to do with it?
Are you demoing the Suite? You only get the instruments in the full Suite version.
Huh, I didn’t realize you could even download Suite as a trial, but it appears you can.
That still won’t give you ALL the instruments in Suite, though; a number of them (Session Drums and EIC 2) are only installable by DVD once you get the box delivered after purchasing the product. But the basics are there: Sampler, Operator, Collision, Electric, Tension, Analog, Drum Machines, Latin Percussion.
