Laptop

Ok without having to spend a grand on a macbook / pro so no suggestions of that please, i need a laptop, i only want to spend… well no more than £600 i guess.

I only need it so i can bring my ableton work with me to college and when im traveling / on holiday etc. So again having windows based would be better & cheaper for me anyways as all my software and plugs are currently windows based too.

Is there any suggestions? I should be getting a student grant in a couple of months so it’s for around then, just could do with some recommendations.

Are Dell any good?

I have no idea about laptops really lol.

TBH Rob, I would ask this nearer the time when the grant comes through as you well know technology today will be differnt in a couple off months as well as price

I hate Dell but thats because off their lousey customer service - I am still using a 3 year old Acer not for music prod and its still going fine

Yeah i guess.

Just getting ahead of myself i guess hah.

Was thinking really for the january sales

Rob,

Take a look at www.scan.co.uk

Click on the pro audio tab and slect lap tops - the cheapest one is more than you want to pay but it might give you some ideas. Scan are a very good company and specialise in computers for production. Think there have been one or two reviews in Computer Music. You could also use a website like dell where you can tell them what you want them to put in it etc like sound cards so fourth - hope this helps

Cheers mate.

I’m really surprised by the cost of those, even the desktops are pricey, can build one the same spec for a lot less.

Are laptops really that expensive? I know i need one that’s going to need the processing power, but £800-1000 for something that’s just going to be used for travel purposes is just mad.

I’ll have to look into whether any of these companies do student discount, I know Apple do but you’re still looking at around 1k for a 13" which is ridiculous.

No you don’t have to fork out that much - they are very expencive at Scan but top of the range - I probably would invest if I was performing live with one and I won the lottery

If there was anything left from all the Crack?

I’m not going to perform with it, if i was going to perform i’d get a macbook because i know they’re less likely to crash than a windows machine lol.

Well you could always buy two pc laptops and keep one for backup for the price of one macbook :stuck_out_tongue:

True that! lol

A Dell Lappy would be able to handle Homemix & a Karaoke Mic, no probs Rob

Would it hold my collection of 60s, 70s, 80s as well as my prized Cheese selection?

Those old dears at the wedding parties do love a boogie.

It would.

It depends what format the cheese is in. The newer Dells can handle a cheese wheel, but the old slices are almost obsolete now.

Gav says that Rob’s cheese is of the Smeg variety

I bought from scan.co.uk years ago - they were good then. Dunno about now.

i have a couple of Toshiba Satellites. I like them, good spec for the money. You probably want a decent screen and a load of RAM. Maybe stick with an Intel chip to cheap the heat down.

I’ve always liked Dell’s. never had an issue with their customer service but i hear it can be appaling.

I’ve never had Intel before, always been an Athlon person personally.

I used to be an athlon boy - but since I built my new desktop with an i7 I don;t think I would go back - especially for a laptop as heat is more ioff an issue

Toshiba seem to be pretty stable too

I just got a Acer Aspire 5553G quad-core AMD Phenom II X4 N9320 with 4GB of DDR3 memory and a 64-bit version of Windows 7 which also has a HD 5470 graphics card on sale from £700 to £549 and I’m pretty impressed with it, upgraded from my core 2 duo intel - worth a look I think
