Layering Kicks
jpgetty2win (25/04/2011)
With a limiter…? Surely thatd muddy it to hell? Just squashin it
sometimes if you EQ the hell out of it… the kick will go into the red.

i use the limiter and set it to dead 0 with no gain. it just helps control the volume for the track.

use a limiter like the Fab Filter Limiter and you can control it pretty easily.

the volume of the kick sets up the rest of the track! its gotta be perfect!

thats just how i do it. and how i’ve been told. im sure others have a different way.

Im not contradicting, interested in how everyone does things.

In the eq isnt there an output level u could pull down to bring it out of the red instead of squashing the peaks with a limiter…?

Or you can bring the volume down in impulse. lots of ways to skin a cat.

I didnt know you work out of logic… You’re my new best friend! :w00t:

And as for the question - Why layer if you don’t have to?

It all depends on what I’m working. Sometimes I find just the right kick in a sample CD.

Other times, as I progress with the track, I find the kick lacking in power and I either find me a more fitting kick or layer the original with something that is lacking (higher, mid or low).

You just gotta make sure that your kick is strong enough to carry your track.
