So do you layer you kicks…

for there is no need of layering Kicks when u already have a beefy Kick from a sample.
IMO layering is good as long that u have a weak kick on your mix.
Wave Alchemy or Goldbaby 909, or Synth Kick from Ultrabeat.
Compressor & EQ.

This and I use Goldbaby 808 as well - no need to layer IMO

+1 for Goldbaby 909 (Tape)
Sometimes I layer the GB 909 hosted in iDrum with a copy of the same GB midi on top. I’m also playing around with a HP on a sampled 909 kick from my vintage Roland XP-30 (JV-80 909 Kick) just above 80hz with a notch just below 38hz.
I usually don’t bother when the sample itself is good enough. but sometimes I’ll add a really deep kick with no high end under it to give it a thump, and that tends to help fatten up the lows. doesn’t always go well though.
i voted the blank one cause i use both
i used to try layerin but its a pain in the arse tryin make them go together
i now have a couple of samples i made meself from wav copies of tacks i love which have a clean kick in them
i still use a bit of compression to get it to fit into my track and eq a bit too
there may be no need tbh but it beefs it up a bit
I vote blank as I’m starting NOT to layer my kicks but have done up to this point
What’s this GB909 I heard you speak of
…and never have or will use a vengeance pack sample
Where is the option for ‘neither, i just steal somebody elses’.

the blank one
sample pack / sample a track whats the difference?
better than stealing a keyboard riff !

Actually now prefer the kicks from WA… but GB’s packs are more extensive. Tons of Kicks etc… recorded clean, mono, stereo & saturated.
+1 on Vegeance… although… I have started to recently fk around with edited bar, 1/2bar drum loops through a load of fx.
Ah yeah I’ve seen the goldbaby site before
Thousands and thousands of 909 808 samples out there, but I still want the real thing
I was taking a few loops from old records there last week… Kicks sounded good, but my needles were pretty cheap… saying that, the loops sounded ace through a compressor.
I think for layering… using the bottom of one of those kicks would be pretty nice. Theres too much crackle & hats n sh!t on the top anyway.

I use anything but vengence, I think they sound piss and of bits of the track they are from still there.
I really like SOR kicks as they are clean. freshly squeezed one are ok too. soild durms from static blue is on my list.
but I’m try to build my own from synths and some layering at the mo. marcel woods gave some good tips on this like layering with toms etc.
This tip from Egg goes on all my Kicks & I think it sounds ace.
Fair play Egg
egg2 (22/01/2011)
the key here is compression man …
make sure you have at least 4db reduction on your threshold with 4:1 ratio
hit your attack on your comp @ around 14ms .
start with maximum /long release and slowly bring it down till it pop’s out
4 me this works on any kick im making
The fast release and higher attack gives the kick a kinda clean distortion that makes it appear to be louder than it actually is because of the extra harmonics added by the distortion … but in context with your track just sounds PHAT and solid
Just the way i do it but please feel free to disect and cuss me hahahahahaha:D
I did the whole layering thing for almost a year. I don’t do it anymore.
I’ve talked to a bunch of pro producers. and none of them layer their kicks.
just pick a good one.
I like the XFER kicks personally.
Ive read that sample kicks off vengeance and that dont need compression cos theyve already been compressed on the original track theyve been sampled from…?

absolutely. i dont compress my kicks anymore. just EQ & filters. with a limiter.
when you compress vengeance kicks they get muddy.
With a limiter…? Surely thatd muddy it to hell? Just squashin it
