Learning mixing and sound design without a sub

I have two yamaha HS 50M speakers, however due to my living situation and income i cant get a sub. br

How important is it to be able to hear sub when you are mixing dance music? If i learn to mix well with the HS 50M speakers will my skills be f’d up when i finally get to own a sub-woofer? I imagine Sound design and mixing bass must be a whole new adventure with a sub.

I’ve got the 50’s but I found that I was unable to hear hardly any of the low end, so decided to have a look on Ebay and managed to pick up a pair of 80’s for half price.br

I cant speak for how a sub would make a difference to your current set up, but having these 80’s made a HUGE difference for me. They’re still very neutral sounding so not tricking me into thinking there’s more bass than there is. br

Whereas with a sub, that’s dedicated bass and I think you would need to treat your room in order to get a true reflection of what you’re hearing.br

Yeah I would say that it’s not massively important. Its more important to learn the traits of the equipment that you have rather than worrying about what you don’t. I have some cheap headphones (the basic skullcandy buds in blue) that I love and can happily build a track with them, if the track sounds good on them, it will sound good on anything.br
