Logic 8 or 9?

After selling my copy of Logic 8 last year I’ve been slowly regretting it. I’m thinking of buying it again, but I’m interested mainly in using it as a mastering package for finishing tracks I’ll be building in Ableton. I’m not too sure whether to go for Logic 8 or 9, however. What are the main differences between the two versions? Do you think the differences would matter for my needs?

Logic 9 is 64bit if that makes a difference to you.

No changes to any fx.

Major changes were housekeeping / GUI / Workflow things really. Few new features like flex time & drum replacement stuff similar to pro tools… or so I hear… dont really use it myself.

Audio file to Sampler Track  - converts any bit of audio to a sampler instrument (EXS24) a la Dr.Rex with midi etc… Really handy.

New Guitar FX unit.

Green line on EQ GUI on channel strips showing current EQ settings.

Apart from that - Nothing.

No new instruments or FX. Everything is pretty much the exact same as L8.

However, the whole GUI / Menu system has got even better IMO with this update… but if you can get L8 for half nothing 2nd hand, which is entirely possible these days, then thats definitely all you need Mate

if its just for mastering why not invest in Bias Peak Pro

Or have someone else master for you.

always worth having someone else master for you imo.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I’ve just seen the price for Bias Peak Pro though and its firmly out of my budget I’m afraid! I think I might try and snag a second hand Logic 8 as I already know my way around it and hopefully it shouldn’t set me back too much. I appreciate the point about getting others to master for me, but at the moment I’m still just mucking about. I’d like to have a go at trying it for myself.

Thanks again everyone!

Sod that, for a small fee you can have your bits tweaked by experienced ears using SSL gear.
