Logic or Ableton?

Hi everyone,

Hope you can help. I am new to the Sonic Academy Forum so appreciate any advice you can lend me.

I am currently learning Logic Pro 8. It is a great DAW. Very powerful and relatively easy to navigate. Also been doing my homework on production theory (reverb, compression, delay etc etc).

A friend told me it’s best to use Ableton Live as it’s easier to use and quicker to get results? Is this true? Any Live users, what are the benefits of Live over Logic or vice versa?

Thank you for your help and time.

Cheers

Andy:)

Hi Andy,

I use Ableton but I also have Logic, ableton is quicker, especially for audio editing and you can’t really beat its flexible routing. But on the other hand Logic is much more powerful DAW and it really has everything that you may ever need to produce and finish a track. It’s much more sophisticated (midi editing for example)

But, because I’m not very good in logic atm I just use it as a giant plugin thru rewire as and when needed. But I’m sure I’ll be using it more often in the future.

Plus apple has very generous student discount so it was only £120

Anyway if you need someone to confuse you more…give me a shout :stuck_out_tongue: but make sure you try a demo version of ableton.

It’s just a matter of choice really. They all do the same thing more or less at the end of the day.

It was something I used to think about a lot until I saw an interview with Soulwax and (maybe on here?) and they said they used Pro Tools, just cos that was what they were used to , and that they all did the same.

Sure some have their little strong points etc, but whichever has the workflow that you get on with the best, this is often the first you use anyway.

For what it’s worth, I use Ableton… but then I don’t have a mac so Logic not an option

Take the best of both worlds and use both. (:

I personally prefer Logic 9, because I believe the audio engine sounds better than Live.

But that`s just my opinion. Occasionally I will use Ableton to spark some different inspiration. Even start a remix in Live and render the parts down and finish it Logic.

Sonic Academy has the best tutorials in the business for both DAWs.

Hey everyone,

Thank you all so much for the advice.I was tweaking the idea to use both, simply because Logic is a powerhouse (SPace and Delay Designers are just beauuuuutfiul).

Ableton does look more flexible and have witnessed its audio editing, nice!

Any more advice please let me know, always happy to talk music

Have a great weekend

Andy

I’d say Ableton is better for remixing as it’s easy to throw things together and come up with ideas, but they’re both very good platforms and i wouldnt really say one is better than the other. If you’re already using Logic there isn’t any point forking out and getting Ableton as Logic is an awesome DAW.

If you can afford both, then do it.

Also don’t worry about if a tutorial isn’t in the DAW of your choice, it’s very easy to work cross platform.

All you need is to have a general understanding of your chosen DAW and what plug in’s it has.

You can get professional music from both of them, however, with any DAW each will excel at specific things more so then other DAW’s. I have worked with Logic and it pissed me off to no high end. With Ableton, since it is a non-traditional DAW, the workflow is different and therefore, for many, they find that it is easier to get their ideas down in Live. At the end of the day, Logic is more powerful, they say that it has a better sound engine, and with Logic Pro, you get a pack of plugins that rivals the Waves stuff. I read an article that said that when you buy Logic Pro, you get something like the equivalent of $1100 worth of plugins included. However, Live has great plugins as well and it suits me perfectly.
