Logics Ultrabeat, Abletons Drum Rack or FXpansions Guru

Which do you prefer?

Ultrabeat, Drum Rack or Guru.

Feel free to comment.

Which one is White & Encrusted in Diamonds?

I like them all…

Ultrabeat is perfect for white noise percussion and making kicks etc… you can side chain and use the sequencer for cool gated effects on synths.

Guru is wicked for the on board effects and has a nice groove engine…

And drum rack is just genius

Use and abuse them all

never used guru, but out of utrabeat and drum racks, its drums racks

I do like with Ultrabeat how much manipulation and control you have over each sample you load into it, you can do the same with Drum Rack but some bits you’d have to add extra plug in’s to do that, where as with Ultrabeat you don’t need to.

interesting as to one is native to logic, one native to Live, and the other a VST. Lets compare apples, oranges, and watermelons next!

guru is the sh*t.

The best thing about UB is the fact that its a step sequencer & you can stick 2 LFO’s & 4 different envelopes on anything you throw into it.

The White noise Osc is class.

Also - the Top Osc - you can make some pretty cool Deep Bass Sounds with it.

That & the fact that you’ve got, dunno, 24 Channels / 24 Osc’s -  in total.

Tweak as you go. Drag & drop the sample. Sweet.

Have Guru also, but been using UB more recently - especially to make Bass. You can get some cool stuff out of it with 3 basses on 3 channels… playing the diffent parts of the pattern, all with a different LFO’s on the pitch of each. Just keep tweaking till you got a groove.

Also, its a nice way - of layering sounds in general. I like Having 2 or 3 of the same sound on a few different channels. All playing at same time. Reverse one, Detune another an octave, change some envelopes / filters… pan them around etc… You can make some mad sounds like that. All Drum machines like that can do it.

Much quicker than using channels in your DAW.

I do prefer Guru, but I’m a VST guy. I like Battery the best TBH. You can use that one with anything!

What about Battery, Nerve, Redrum and all the other quality ones lol

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Redrum seems massivly limited in comparison?

I think we can safely say that most powerful synths and VSTs can pretty much do anything now. If you’re at a point where you’re manipulating that parameters that much then you’re more than likely creating your own drums and not so much using samples. On the flip, why not run the sound through something like simpler and tweak it, re-sample, and then re-arm the track with the new sound?

No, because its a throwback to classic programming of a 909, 808, or 707. Thats how it always used to be done. Plus, you can pitch your drums to the key of your track. Check out the D16 stuff.

I used to love Redrum.

Thing I liked most about it was just how easy it was to get a groove going.

My favourite thing to do was to load a couple of loops / drum loops or whatever - into the channels of the Redrum.

Hit a few steps. Then use the sample start & lengths to get a bit of the loop that sounded cool. It wasnt in sync with the BPM that was playing, so you could get some unusual rhythms from it. Especially if you put different velocities & had it hitting the start time.

It was cool & you could get a nice bounce with it - but it was just a little too basic without EQ’s on the channels. Too much routing needed to do something that takes 2sec in something else. Still, deadly little machine.

like i said dude, check out the D16 stuff if you havent. I think you will be very happy.
