hey producers/dj’s/engineers/,
so i’m not a drummer, i am a semi decent sound designer in my opinion and i play some instruments en stuff , but what i want to ask is , how do you make a really phat beat? i don’t like to use samples that much but i always am cause i can never find myself making a drum beat that is tight and good sounding like a nice sample for example.
any advice would be completely helpful thoughtful.
this seems to be one of my downfalls of producing…
I would suggest layering some of your kicks or snares for a phat sound…Usually when i do beats i start of with a basic beat you know kick Snare Kick Snare then add other stuff such as Bongos Hats etc Often i layer kicks with one kick being louder than the other…Another good suggestion and one of my favorite VST’s / Plug in is Camel Phat look it up its really good!
Well i hope i helped a lil

when you say, you don’t want to be using samples, do you mean that you want to synthesis all the sounds or are you just talking about loops ?
i think the phatness from some of those sampled percussion hits comes from them being a sample of a sample of a sample.
for making loops though i would start with a kick and clap that sound nice with each other and build from there up. with hats i tend to just use one open hat and make 3 copies of it with different release settings to get the open and closed sound.
if its phatness on the drums then parralell compress your drums and have the compressed version playing a little bit lower in voume alongside orginal kit ,this should give you phat drums:)
Also try filtering the sounds from different kicks/snares etc ie for kick one sound for subs one for mid sounds, and one for click sound i usually use and eqs for this as they are more precise at cutting out frequencies!
thank you all. means alot
ha jon, i mean like i just don’t want to use samples for a drum rythm. i dont mind getting hits en what not from them. but i was at a point and im sure we have been there where … I still am just throwhin a drum loop cause i am to confusesd about making my own drum sounds but you all have told me good stuff. ill be on it.
once again thanks that was so kind of you all.
ttys !
Don’t forget the effects and groove settings makes the difference in building a beat.u can use a drum machine to make beats but that wouldn’t make any difference if you don’t know how to use the effects
