Dear Sonic Crew,
I know that this issue has been discussed many times via this forum,
and i also understand that mastering is a science performed by experts
and that different technics are used per track depending the feeling that every
producer wants highlight.
However i do believe that some general instructions and technics would help a lot anyone who is insted in improving the quality and the final sound of produced tracks.
I suggest to give a priority to such a video tutorial
tks / have a great weekend
“mastering tutorial”
Seconded
yeah this would be cool man !
Count me in! There’s a whole lot of crappy information out there. I came across something just yesterday that actually suggested compressing your stereo output before EQ!!! WTF!!!
Raymond
actually, isn’t the missing module 10 of the Ableton tut supposed to cover the basic mastering technique and chain setup?

I’ve seen a few sources, including in Future Music magazine that advices to put the EQing after the compression but this wasn’t regarding mastering. Phil could you advise?

Don’t know, because it’s err… missing
:w00t::w00t::w00t::DHAHAHA…just imagine that is is my common practice to compress master channel and after eq it…:w00t:
come on sonic guys …we need this desperately!!!
I’m no master of the mastering, but I do know that it has a lot to do with what “sound” you are trying to get. And that sound determines what order you set up your mastering chain: EQ, Compressor, Limiter, Tubes, etc, etc. I do know as well as the rest of you do, that what order you set these critical items in determines a great deal of what sound you will get. The only reason the compression before EQ seems odd to me is that: why would you want to squish the sound down before trying to get your EQ right. It seems like it would make more sense to get your frequencies right first before trying to smash it all together. I have seen theories that say you should compress first, and then listen to it. If it sounds off, then you have to go back and fix your mix, not necessarily the EQ. Ideally according to the texts, you should have to do very little EQing if your mix is right. Again, I’m no master, and I agree. SONIC HELP!!!
Raymond
i belive the compressor before the EQ is what they call pre-compression usually have a ratio of 2:0 with around a 1Db reduction then EQ and then more compression.
Again i’m not an expert!!!
sounds good.
Hi guys
I have just watched the new videos on mastering and they are great.
Can you post a link where to find the VST’s?
Free ones and paid one’s!
Cheers guys
…The links to the free plugs are on the same page where you pick video 1 or 2. Just google Waves mastering plugins for the rest of them. Be prepared, the Waves stuff is PROFESSIONAL mastering plugs, and will run you a pretty penny. The Sonalksis stuff is far more affordable and will get the job done for you just as well. That I think runs around $300 USD for the suite including the stereo widener that Phil uses. Hope this helps!!
