Max for Live

Ableton are offering 25% off. Is it worth having? Has anyone here got it, let me know what you think.

I have Reaktor and I have been wanting to make some effects, but I stop myslef because the time I have available I need to spend on getting better at producing, not ****ing around making stuff.

Max for Live hurts my brain.

Gotta agree with you on this one J

Yeah, I like the idea of it of course, but it just looks like another way for me to waste countless hours meddling with stuff and not getting anywhere.

I’d like to get into it ultimately, but think I owe it to myself to get a high competence in the fundamentals first.

Would you believe ive never actually used it.

I built a drum machine in Max 2 years ago… it could drive you clinically insane trying to keep on top of all the connections you need for relatively simple tasks.

It is kinda awesome tho… total time sucker.

One of those when your sitting with the missus at dinner time working on max then you look up its 4am and eveyones been asleep for hours. youre all alone wondering where the last 8 hours went.

For anyone who’s interested in learning Max for Live, there is a great (free) course run by a guy called Peter Batchelor who I think must be a lecturer:

I’ve had Max for a while and nothing was sticking with the included tutorials, but the course above is structured in such a way that is much more accessible. He get to the interesting stuff straight off the mark - by the end of the first lesson you’ve built your first step sequencer!

Wow he certainly put alot off effort into those tuts - nice find

I know - the best way I’ve found is to complete the pdf files first then watch the videos to clear up any bits I’ve not understood properly first time round.

If anyone else knows of any good M4L courses - please post! Perhaps Sonic Academy should do one?

IMHO, Max was overhyped. It is a great tool for opening up Live’s API, and has made for some great ways to build and integrate instruments and controllers, but if you don’t buy it, you probably won’t miss it.

I just love the normal Live too much.

Totally agree with your way of learning as I like to do exactly the same read first and watch after - but everyone has their own way of learning

Wise words. I am going to hold off for now.

My head hurts now

Yeah thanks for bringing this up again because regardless of what I said in my last post I did buy it and I have barely used it. You’ve made me look a little silly.

You mean something like Ant’s tour to Japan recently

HAHAHAHAHAHA

i would get it (and i have it). Let me tell you why.

I NEVER intend on making a synth or effect with M4L. However… Imagine spending a couple hundred bucks (or whatever it costs) on a piece of software that comes integrated into your DAW, which comes with some awesome plugins already created. I talked to the lead Ableton Certified Trainer for the US (Houston Singeltary), and he said the same thing, that he got M4L with the strict intention of using the other things that people make and post online to download for free. i think its a usefull tool dood.
