Ask any true artist what art is. There’s this ignorant concept of originality out there conceived by people that can’t or don’t create a work that is digestible.
The Berghain sound is a result of three plus decades of artists bringing Detroit, London, and Berlin to the table and rehashing and re-exploring ideas. Negation is in the process of copying and to an artist this is called ‘editing.’
So a man from Malaysia exploring the Berghain sound through his own cultural filter now is the boundary, not some imaginary boundary and new genre you perceive to be out there. Every genre of music to exist comes directly from its fans copying it and giving their own interpretation on it.
If no one were to imitate the sound, it would mean the sound is irrelevant and uninspiring. A more apt analogy to your photocopy one, is everyone imitating it would be like people breaking it into pieces and taking their favorite parts and making another sculpture or collage where new details emerge.
People here are trying to find new ways to explore the sonic playground more than they are trying to emulate X track or Y artist. It’s a bit more complex than you’re giving it credit for.

This is my favourite subject - Boredom Warning!!
Tech is definitely going through a major change at the moment. The Whole Minimal / Tech House thing has fractured & you’ve got the minimal camp still doing it that way & the tech house lot going all ethnic sample mad.
Listening to stuff on Beatport, all you can hear as you skip through countless tracks is Stab, Funny Sample, White Noise, Riser… on pretty much every track. Its gone a little formulaic & stale at best…
Thats why the direction its taking now is soo good. Its got so many elements, from Deep House, Acid, House, Dub, Dubstep, Loop Techno, you name it. Its complete freedom to explore. Its all tied together by the glue that is the low end… the rest is up to you.
Theres some real Doomy Fx laden Tech, Harder Tech House w.big reverbs & the more Abstract falling apart sounding Tech - All of which I lump into this current sound.
Some of the Guys have been chugging away since late 90’s / 00’s & never got on the Minimal Train. But plenty have come back to it after exploring it. They had to raise their game to make Minimal & undoubtably gained so much knowledge in sound design & pulling off a super skillful mix. Its funny that the rebellion against Minimal was/is/has actually been fulled by experience from Minimal.
I can totally identify with the point the Guy in that post was making, cos I feel the exact same way about it. I love this sound. Feel totally inspired to explore the limits of my DAW to see what sort of noises I can get out of it. I dont feel that I’m copying anyone in particular… but I’m inspired to experiment experiment experiment.
Its good to realise that there are no limits. This is what we should all know / do anyway, but its good to be reminded. I dont give 2 fks anymore about what something sounds like… its all about the idea & whether I love the music or not. Thats whats so cool about all that old Detroit stuff.
It’ll be interesting to see just how commercial it’ll become. I think it’ll be all about the music this time. I think there was a time there where the whole Minimal / Tech House stuff just got so soulless & commercial. I used to buy 10 - 15 tracks a month from Beatport for a long time. Then it was 3-4, then nothing. I’ve moved on.
Its got to be about the music & the passion at the end of the day, otherwise its just a load of wank.
