Mixdown on subbass?

I’ve sorta hit a block as of recently… a lot of my newer music i’m attempting to produce requires the use of subbass, an easy enough task but I just can’t seem to get it to fit right in the mix…

The kick is rolled off at around 130. seems to sound ok over my studio monitors. Everythings EQ’d to mesh together well while leaving a bit of room around the bass frequencies… now for some reason the sub just won’t sit right… It may sound to muddy at points, and most often it’s just extremely unnoticeable in the mix. i’m rolling off my subs at 40hz as well as EQ’ing out any harmonics in the bass that may cause it to sound a bit to phat. I’m using Massive to synthesize my subbass. (just seems to allow for a smoother sound, plus it’s easier to screw with for me)

anyway, could anybody here perhaps give me a walk through on this? I’m not sure what i’m doing wrong… I know it could take people years to master the mixdown art, but I don’t want to be stuck in this block for that long.

edit: I hope this helps… this is what i’m attempting to create. I figure it should be easy enough. just envelope play but basically it’s a bit of a bumpy sounding sub Have You Ever (CubeHard Remix) - Abeyance Shauny C & Gammer - YouTube

Hi, I’m still learning to mix things myself, so I am no expert but rolling off your kick at 130 sounds very high. I would expect the kick to peak between 60 - 80Hz, this might be differences in the style of music though.

With sub bass I make sure that if it is playing at the same time as the kick the bass makes room for the kick. So I would side chain it or use audio filter to automate the filter to raise the filter freq every time the kick plays. I would also play the bass line up an octave, probably with a more interesting sound, so systems that can’t reproduce those low freq can also hear it.

Lastly I try to program the sub sound so it pokes through a little. Looking at my latest project I have one sine wave with the filter env set to open and close quickly to give it just a little bite.

How well you can mix sub bass is going to depend on how well your monitors can reproduce those frequencies I guess.

I do some Deep House and tech house . and i have been using alot of Sub bass for my tracks but i try not to use at the same time of my kick. since i want my kick with alot of low end. so yeahh sidechain helps but also helps the way how you program your bass
