hello people when you split a signal up into different frequencies to apply multi band processing, eg adding a phaser to the mid range and maybe a delay to the top end. how do you split it properly. i do it by creating 3 copies of the same track. applying a hpf, band pass filter and lpf to them (one on each) now… here my question… where do you place the filter frequency so not to “overlap”?? also does the Q play a part in making sure youve got clear “sections”?? i read a brief remark today that they should all be set to the same frequecies and have the same Q values… meaning the HPF and lower filter on the BPF filter should both be (say errmm) 400hz for example. the top end filter on the BPF and the HPF should both be 2khz all with the same Q… doing this makes sure you dont get any frequency overlaps.
was using this approach before but wanted to use just filters instead of the multiband compressors as they use up alot less cpu memory than the compressors
you can use standard filters(EQ, etc) but you will almost certainly not get it perfect, plus you can introduce some phase problems …either may not be an issue in a track, but that’s the ‘science’
alternatively you can google or search kvr for crossover plugs or funky sounding Linkwitz Riley filters, but presumably multi band already uses those
if you’ve converted to audio and you have three audio channels each with one multiband compressor on I don’t think that will take up too much CPU speed bro.
ok guys thanks for the comments. ill just use the MB comp. ive got a gd pc and ive got quite abit of RAM but seeing as im on XP, which caps you at 3gigs RAM, im thining about upgrading to windows 7 to utilise that extra ram that i bought without knowing about the XP cap :@
if anyones got any tips of how to get around that XP cap thing without having to shell out for windows 7 id love to hear.
roben (20/05/2010)
I never knew they had a cap! How cheeky. Just as well I only had 3Gb ram when i was XP.
Tbh it’s 100% worth the move to windows 7, i got it near beginning of the year from XP and i wouldn’t go back. Just pay off a student to buy it cheaper for you. Or there are ‘demos’ flying around ;)
ye im just hesitant to make the move incase some of my software dont integrate well. thinking about buying a new hard drive and install it on there, then all of my software, if it works smoothly with them all, ill just copy over my files to the new HD. doing it this way i can just unplug the new HD wipe it clean and just use it as another back up HD if it dont work.
ye a friend of mine is a computer genius. he built his pc for me too. he said thats a possibilty but if the boot file(?) gets corrupted in the win 7 install, then id be buggered lol
