Hiya, I am new to music production and have subscribed to the site as well as watching training videos where I feel I am making good progress.
However I still dont understand a lot of the things I am doing. I was just wondering is there, or could it be possible to make a music production dictionary which instead of showing you what to do it briefly explains in a few lines what that command actually does?
At the moment I am mimicing the tutorial steps in producing my own stuff but dont truly understand what certain things do and consequently I think a dictionary would maybe benefit me as well as other people who feel a bit warey of straying from the steps as performed in the tutorials?
I have looked at a few sites which have major terms defined on them but they lack definitions for many of the options available in software such as cubase or ableton.
I am sorry if I have wasted anyone’s time in posting this but I was thinking this may help out those like me who feel a little lost when performing a command found in a tutorial.
Don’t apologise - we’ve all been there! Its a pain starting out when you don’t know the jargon used. I don’t know of any dictionary as such (although a simple search in something like wikipedia will soon sort out any unfamiliar terms), but I would definitely recommend Rick Snoman’s Dance Music Manual. I’ve just bought this myself and it is brilliantly written - accessible without over simplifying. It will put you on the right path regarding a lot of music terminology, together with the concepts behind them.
We’ve all been there don’t you worry, it’s just like anything you pick up for the first time, it’s like you’re trying to understand chinese.
It all slots and pieces together with time and practice don’t you worry! You may hear all this jargon at the moment but a lot of it you don’t need to know about right now, it all slots into place the more you learn, the better you become etc.
Sometimes people when they first start out go into information overload, you don’t need to stress about the advanced stuff when you don’t even know the basics! Remember you have to walk before you can run. Start with the basics and work yourself up.
If there is something in particular you’re really stuck on, just ask on the forums or try Google

Yeah yeah dude. I honestly believe whole heartedly that it should be a staple in every dance music producers library. I am also reading Logic Pro 9 Power! too. Thats another one. And lastly is that other book by Sample Magic. I actually have two copies of that one. Ive been meaning to sell the one copy, but I keep forgetting… Oh well.
