Musical Theory Jargon

Hi folks, i’m relatively new to sonic and production. I’ve been watching the vids and trying things out and i have developed a drumbeat and bassline which i think has potential. I’ve adjusted all the sounds as shown and that has definitely helped. However, i don’t have a clue what half of the terms are and why i am changing them, e.g. attack, drive, pan, envelope, release, compressor, ratio, dry/wet, knee etc etc…

Is there a sonic video, a book/programme anyone could advise that would explain what these terms mean. I just want to have an understanding of what i’m doing.

Any advice will be gratefully received, thanks.

I know theres some SA tech tips that cover some of those, I know the compression tutorial has been covered very well!

Happy studying!

I think every thing you mentioned is covered in the tuts - somewhere

Also buy Computer Music for Musicians - I think the majority of people here have it

Also practise and you will discover what they actually do by listening

Good luck

Thanks for the swift response folks. I realise it’s a marathon not a sprint so i’ll keep plugging away. Good luck with all your productions.

more like 20 marathons and a half:D
