My dillemma

im stuck in 2 minds at the minute!!

been learnin with s.a for 4 months now and i dont know if i have confidence in my ability to make a decent track yet and whether or not i should attempt to make 1??

or will it possibly make me pick up bad habits and i should stick with the learnin for now??

or could it be a good thing and i find my own style/sound instantly??

what do you guys reckon?

what did you guys do?

help please!!!

Hi, I say make the best track you can, but don’t get hung up on making everything perfect as this can stop you getting it finished. I try to do complete tracks because I learn so much more than I would if I gave up on them because they aren’t good enough to be released. Each time I finish a track it sounds far better than the last one, and as long as that trend continues I will eventually get to the level I want to be.

The other thing I do is I don’t get too hung up on tweaking the same track for weeks, I decide it is finished and I can come back to it later but for now I will start a new track.

The BEST way of learning is to DO.

Start making a track, it may not be the best track ever, but it’s PRACTICE, the more you make tunes the more you get better at it.

You can watch videos all day, every day but unless you actually apply and DO it yourself you’ll never master it. Also, by application trial and error, you pick up your own new skills.

Producers sometimes make 100s of tracks until they’re making tunes good enough for release.

Start making music… NOW.

+1 to what both Ant and Roben said.

You need to DO. Watching the vids is cool and helpful of course but you’ll embed that knowledge so much more efficiently by actually producing.

I too would say start making the track - I am probably in the same boat as you as I have really just returned to produceing with a 15 year gap but have about 4 tracks which I am working on.

Its like riding a bike you could watch someone do it all day but untillyou get on and fall off a few times thats the only way your going to learn

I would also say every musician/producer has gone through this dilema in some form or other so you are in the best company - and I am sure the good members here will point out in a non patronizing way where they think you could improve.

yeah!!

you guys are right. i need to DO it!!

i keep thinking that the 1st track i make has to be great and ready for release, which is holdin me back from makin my 1st attempt!

but im gonna go for it…

wkd site, wkd ppl, i’ll say it again!!!

I’m sorry to say this buddy but that is very VERY unlikely! & why should it matter anyways? Mastery should never be rushed, you’d be much happier and pleased with the outcome having worked up to it anyways.

You never know it could be - but do not be disheartened if it ain’t, I am sure even Picasso drew some stinkers in his day

yeah i know… you guys are right!!!

guess im just tryin to hard to get it spot on so early.

when i get the 1st track done il have it up on here straight away!!

so when do you know your ready? like at the point where its ready to send off and maybe not something that shouldnt go onto the social networkin sites??

I think you just kind of know. There comes appoint where you, hopefully, realise that tweaking it isn’t going to significantly improve it. You have to take a step back from it and listen. Yesterday I was tweaking the bass on my latest track and all I could hear was the bass. It started to sound wrong. So I took a break and came back to it later and that intense focus on the bass was gone.

So take a step back and listen to the flow as a whole. I always get other people in the house to listen too and comment. Sometimes I follow their suggestions, sometimes not. But it always helps to get another comment. Plus comments from guys on here always help too.

+1 to all

Doing is defo name of the game, I was making excuses for 3 year of music tech degree, I was learning but not applying it and that’s not constructive you can’t start from the top, you have to accept that to begin with stuff is going to suck, mine still does, but I’ve decided to njoy the ‘creative process’ and just have fun.

I’ve accepted that it’ll be some time before I get where I want with my music, but that is not important, the process is

The only thing that I’m now trying to work around is to have a deadline, I’ve finished most of my 4 track final year project in 2 days. But since then I haven’t finished a track in like a month :doze:

Anyone like that too?

its better to make as many tracks (and finish them) as possible. you will be faced with different questions and problems (and solutions) as you go through, which will help you in the next track that you make.

I am yet to try my hand at Ableton as i only got it a few days back and im currently collecting a load of samples to use BUT, i signed upto SA today, watched some videos, mainly the latest on how to make a progressive house track and now i cannot wait to get stuck in!

I think thats the case with anything thou, you should hit it head on, get Ableton loaded or whatever software your using and get stuck in!

Hey im in the same problem your in i cant seem to make a track i want to make it the best there ever was but what i have started to do is make a weekly song along with studying and learning music with SA videos books etc… every week i make a track and every week i pick up on things i can improve on…Just keep practicing and one day you’ll master it

Well said but, making it the best can take some time… i know some of my friends picked up production quite fast and have knocked out tune after tune and they have been good, signed upto record labels etc whereas i know other people that have been at it for years and still cant crack it!

But, again when your making your own music you will always find slight imperfections… the worst thing you can do is listen to it too much, let other people decide for you

I think the main issue for everyone is that there are so many Plugins for everything . I always wanted to try all the cool PLug ins but i noticed my creativity dissipated .and i wasnt able to finish a track . now that i limited myself to the Cubase Plug ins i seen alot of progress in finishing tracks and also when i think something in my head is easy to know what tools to choose for the right Job . still like everyone else i dont think i have a hot track but i am sure if we all keep working hard and learning we will end up making a hot track someday .

do what everyone above me said to do! :stuck_out_tongue:

Thats exactly it ,if you spend a lot of the time worrying about plugs your creative juices dry up pretty quickly, find a plug you like the sound of and stick with it and learn it inside out and back to front and after you know what all the functions do then youll be able to apply that knowledge to whatever similar plugs are out there

Plug ins can’t live with them can’t live without them :stuck_out_tongue:

bad habits are a good thing mate, its makes you make mistakes and all the best things in music are made by mistake lol
