Do you listen to your old stuff and think. “Wow, that’s perfect. Wouldn’t change a thing!”?
jjdejong0 (16/08/2011)
Lol if you potentially throw away a track because you think oh ill do that better in my next track then who knows what you could be potentially throwing away?!? Seems like an awfull compromise when you can simply tweak something and get your track sounding as good as it possibly can…
Sure you could spend a month on a track and find out its just not a good track no matter what you try and do but the lessons you will learn are priceless.
The lesson that you shouldn’t waste your time fannying about with tweaking that “perfect sound”- whatever that maybe?

yeahh Jan i had the same question too . hehhe
The thing is, when is spending hours or days or months tweaking a track a waste of time?
Also sure i dnt think my tracks are perfect but i know that they are the best they ‘could’ be before i send them off.
I mean this is why its so hard for A&R because there mail boxes are filled up with 95% bull**** tracks where the time and consideration has not been put in and alot of it is from producers who dont take the time or effort to really finish a track but just bang out twenty a day in the hopes one will get picked up.
also its not my place to tell you how and why you should produce im just so incredibly happy that i dont share your mentality because i want everything that is attached to me to sound awesome.

But the thing with that is … they come unstuck sooner or later …90% prep is the key , and having the knowledge to put into practice what you have learned is a massive leap forward
Ok im gonna have to clarify this topic and what I meant. When you arrange your track, ie you take your 8 bar loop or whatever and try to structure it out. This is where you have to take your time and make sure each section of your track sounds as good as it can. Next come the transitions between the different sections of your track.
Im not telling anyone to tweak a synth for a month or even work on an intro for a month because if it takes you that long your doing something wrong. Now, what I am saying is that you should treat your 32 bar intro in exactly the same way you would your drop or breakdown whatever. Dont get intto the habbit of rushing through sections that you find boring just to get to the good stuff and get a track finished.
A bad track arranged well will sound better than a good track arranged poorly. Arrangement is also not just getting everything down in your daw, its also making sure everything flows and vibes well and the only way your gonna fully achieve this is by making sure your intro sounds just as tight as the main parts of your track.
I hope this clarifies what I was aiming for with the initial thread…
I still dont get the point of this thread.
Initial post was pointing out obvious common truths. OK.
Wheres the tip?
There obviously not obvious for everyone…
Eye sea now. Thats grate advise Jan

Yeah just throw it down. If it works great if it doesn’t, push it to one side and start another project. Maybe go back to it later. The key is trial and error. You’ll see your work improving the more you produce
This is quite possibly the greatest post on the entire internet.

Thats obvious
so far page 2 and page 4 are the best of this thread…
i’d love to meet the guy that can do 20 tracks a day.
(which im sure was just jan exaggerating to make a point…)
i could barely do a track in a week… and if it was only a week… then it would suck.
more like a month of my time or more. mostly because its all about refinement.
and on top of that… when I write… i already know 50% of how its gunna go.
i just work on sounds & sections and then I extract melodies and continue to build it.
arrangement comes to you through practice & practice alone.
a year ago when i would start an arrangement… i’d be lost… now-a-days. i just know.
you guys do realise english isnt my first language right?
