New Production - House Tune

Hi everyone,

So I only recently joined the website, and have only had Ableton for about 2 weeks, but here is the first track that I really like. It needs some more work I think, but I’d love to hear your feedback. Do you think the “Bass” vocal sample is a bit cheesy?

Also I need to work on some more risers / sweeps. The main breakdown in the full version is very sparse at the moment.

cheers!

PS - Sorry, can anyone tell me how to embed soundcloud players?

Congrats on the acquisition of Ableton and joining our family here first.

The first track you like isn’t really a track (or just a very short radio version…).

There are a few things you need to take in mind:

  • EQ (make sure the bassline isn’t interfering too much with the kick, muddying it all up. Sidechain the bass with kick)
  • Groove (try to loosen up the rhythmic sections a bit by not placing all elements exactly on spot. You might introduce some swing)
  • Listen (listen to what you’re working on. During the building process and when mixing donw. Are all elements loud enough. Aren’t some too loud. Etc.)

Not a bad attempt considering you’re short acquaintance with this DAW.

To embed the SC player, click on “share” it’s in the top left of the player(I think). It opens up a window with copiable Url and code. Copy the code and simply past it in your posts.

As for your track, I agree with the comment from Daniaan. There is a very good tutorial “How to make progressive house”. Even if you don’t want to make progressive it will show you a couple of tricks like compression and sidechaining with a very hands-on approach.

Great, thanks for the advice and fast replies. yeah, its not the full track, just the first couple of minutes, I haven’t arranged the breakdown yet, so didn’t bother exporting that. What I’ve uploaded is the start of the track going into the breakdown at 2:30min.

  • I’ve sidechained the white noise against the kick, but will do the same for the bassline too.

  • With the EQ of the bassline and kick drum, shall I put a spectrum on the kick to see which frequencies it occupies, then use an EQ Eight to dip those frequencies in the bassline?

  • Groove - when you say rhythmic sections do you mean the drum tracks? I’ve watched a couple of tutorials about this so I think I can have a go. Are ‘groove’, ‘shuffle’ and ‘swing’ the same thing??

  • Embedding SC player - thanks! I was playing around with square bracket BB code like on other forums I post on!

I’ll post an update in a couple of days… I’m meant to be revising for Uni exams!
